What sort of feedback is there for purchasing a complete rebuilt head from one of the big suppliers or doing it yourself as a novice. I also need a fan shroud. This forum is appreciated.

You will have problems trying to get a fan shroud, no-one is doing new ones, you will need to search the wreckers yards.

It depends on what you need to do to your cylinder head and what machinery you have available. Why do you think you need to rebuild the head?
Personally, If I needed a heavy rebuild(valves, guides and surfacing), I wouldn't do anything but take the head and the rocker assembly off and re-install them with a new gasket kit.
The valves require a double angle grind and all sorts of special tools are needed for inspecting the head, replacing or knurling the valve guides, replacing valve seats, truing the surface etc.
If all you need to do is to replace the head gasket, valve stem seals, and clean up and lap the valves, then you could probably do that yourself.
Just my opinion.
