I recently purchased a 6ft. blade for this tractor. When using hydralics to lift blade lifting blade is no problem. But when I lower the blade to hold a position at ground level the hydralics will lift the blade on its own to max height. I have to hold the lever right at the height I want or it will just raise the blade right up. Is this normal. By the way when there is no weight on the hydralics it will hold the setting. Any thoughts on this?

Are you possibly thinking that there is Position control on these tractors, sorry but there isn't but you can buy a kit called a "Zane Thang" (just type it in Google)You could also check that there isn't any undue free play in the top link connection on the tractor. When the blade is lifted you should just be able to turn the Control Spring behind the seat, if there is end play you need to adjust it to take it out. Problem is it may be seized up after all this time and you may need to take the Top Cover off the Hydraulics to hold the inside while you adjust it. If you need info on what to do, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
Does the Hydraulic lever not hold in one position and stay there, is that is what is causing your problem, if it is slack, tighten the nut at the bottom of the lever. If it will not tighten the friction disc maybe worn away and require replacing, just look at this site in the spare parts section.

Thanks for the info John. It does seem to be the hydralic lever. I will put in the bottom position and it will slowly creep up until the blade reachs the top then stop. I have to check that lever and make sure it is tight enough. Thanks again.

If it is creeping up like you say it may just need adjusting but it could be the friction disc has gone hard and be glazed so the friction is less or the friction disc could have cracked and broken. Just try tightening it as you say, also check the spring washer under the nut as it is a double coil type and if it rusts it will not be as strong as necessary to apply pressure to the disc. Do make sure that you replace the split pin as the nut will keep coming loose unless you do. For operating the blade if you lengthen the top link with the lever about third of the way down the quadrant, the draft control will kick in and operate the blade height automatically, lengthen the top link to go shallower, shorten it to go deeper. The top link should be set to 25" centre to centre of the linkage pin holes for a start.
Keep the lever at the same position by using the lever stop once you find the right position and set it all up. You need to check the Control Spring behind the seat for all this to work correctly, with the blade lifted, the Spring should just be able to be turned by hand, if it has too much play in it, the Draft control can't work correctly as it will start to lift too soon as there is nothing to stop the internal linkage from moving due to the free play, it needs to push against the Spring to get the correct control settings. If you need information on how to set this up, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk....John
