I just bought a tractor which is painted and decaled MF-35. The serial plate is missing. How can I tell if it's a MF-35 or a Ferguson TO-35. Any help is much appreciated.

I could be off one year on the MF-35, but I have never seen or heard of a TO-35 after 1960. But on the gas MF-35 the fuel tank showing and the hole for the crank handle being lower are a sure sign
of the MF-35. Also all the MF-35's I've seen
have the key switch and start button together on the left side of the dash and the right side was saved for the Multi-Power option which was available on the MF's.

I have a TO35, SGM205572, which is a 1960, red sheet metal, silver grey body. My understanding is that the MF35 didn't start until 1962

Brian assuming your tractor is in original
condition, such as original sheet metal.
Pre 1958 TO-35"s had two push buttons to open the small door on the hood. 1958 and later had one
knob in the center. TO-35"s were in production
until 1961 when they became the MF-35. Also on gasoline models the hole in the chin piece
under the grill were the hand crank goes is about
1.5 inchs down from the bottom of the grill on
TO-35"s and about 2.5 inchs on the MF-35. And on the MF-35 if you look below the hood line you will see about 3 inchs of gas tank showing, while on the TO-35 it is about 1.5 inchs. IF you decide yours is a TO there are some other items that will help determine the year. Hope this is some help to you.

Rob, Huge help thanks very much to all. It looks like it's a MF-35 based on the fact that the hood has a knob in the middle and you can see at least 3 inches of gas tank under the hoodline.

If you have the engine data plate post the engine serial number and Paul(AZ) will help with the year. You can also tell the general era by the Ferguson badge back ground color.

Green= TO-35 Dec. 1954 to April 1956,
Red= TO-35 May 1956 to Dec. 1957.
White= MF-35 1958 and later. (no side hood emblems -I think)

I think thoes are correct I am sure it will be corrected if not.

See the paint code information at the FENA site.

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that the tractor has been painted and has no badges. It is painted as though it is a MF35. I need to know if there were any serial numbers on the tractor other than the dash plate. Also are there any obvious differences between the TO-35 and the MF-35 that I could easily see? There is a plate on the engine but is has been painted over. I will see if I can get the paint off. Do you know if this plate shows the model number on it? Thanks again for your help

The engine plate will have the engine serial number. FENA editor Paul Nelson has data that shows when engines were manufactured and shipped to Ferguson/MF. Engines were generally installed right away, thus it will give a reasonably close date for the tractor. Though not as accutate as the tractor SN it should be sufficient for you question.

i.e. if the engine is Pre- 1958 then TO-35 if Post '58 then a MF35.

Sheet metal was the same other than color on the -35's.
