tired lift question

The hydraulic pressure on my to30 lift is slowely fading, falling from almost 2000psi to now less than 1400 psi under full load, making it more and more difficult to lift and move round bales about. Yes I know I am pushing the lift to its limit but I really can't fault the tractor for wearing down after more than 50 years of service. My concern is, do I buy the full rebuild kit (with new chambers) or just the basic kit. I would like this to be a one time rebuild to new specs not a patch it up job. What have other members found when tearing into the pump and how have the rebuilds turned out? Just for comparison, my neighbor has an old Ford 3000 that has been used and abused and it picks these 4x5 bales up without any issues at all (also a 30 hp tractor)

After 50 years the Pump must be worn. don't forget it has no filter in the system so it will also depend on how often the oil has been changed. If it isn't dropping but won't lift, then it is the Pump, if it drops then there is a leak. The low pressure could be caused by either one. If you intend to overhaul the Pump then you need to get the whole kit c/w side chambers and valves, replace the Control Valve and the Safety valve too. Sparex do a kit that includes all these parts S61725 you need the control Valve S60057 too. If you fit this kit it will replace all the worn parts that there could possibly be. These parts will also be available from this site too, look in the parts section. If you are checking the pressure using the load on the lower links, the weight will create the pressure shown on the gauge, to check the actual pressure you need to prevent the lower links from going to the top and you need to hear the safety valve blowing (if it will), that is the only way you will get a maximum pressure reading.

John, the lift will stall out @1400psi and will not lift further, accompanied by quite a bit of pump rattle so I think I will find wear pretty much through the entire pump assembly. Also, if I read your reply correctly you do recommend replacing the valve chambers as well?

Yes, replace the side chambers complete and the pistons too. I think if it is as bad as you say that the pistons will be scored and consequently the side chambers will too. The rattling noise is a characteristic of this type of Pump and is not unusual, even a new one will sometimes do that. These Pumps will operate quite happily even when you think they are worn out, providing the oil is the correct grade. Change the safety valve first, you may find that is all it is. Some of these operators leave the Safety Valve blowing without a thought of what it is doing, consequently the valve wears and the pressure will drop, just make sure that if you have an implement or a drawbar that prevents the lower links from rising completely to the top then the lever must be moved forward to stop it Pumping. If the check chain brackets are fitted incorrectly, they can cause the linkage not to rise fully, the chains should be attached to the brackets above the level of the PTO shaft. Don't remove the Pump until you have tried replacing the safety valve as this may save you a lot of work and expense.
