Steering problem

I have a 1956 TO35. The left steering shaft "one the pitman arm hooks to" is leaking some fluid. I went and bought a new seal and dust pad. I replaced it but noticed the shaft had alot of up/down side/side play. It knocked out the new seal I put in. Is there a bearing or something in there that needs replaced. I looked at the book and it shows a bearing/ sleeve. Could this be what needs to be replaced and if so how difficult is this? Thanks Shawn

If its like my MF-135 steering gear box, the bushing hasn't been available for a decade or more. Its a Garlock steel backed bushing. What I did for mine was to buy pourous bronze bushings and turn them to fit (I did all four including the ones in the caps that don't show a separate part number in my MF parts book). Then I made a wooden shaft with a slot in the end the depth or a bit more of the length of the bushing. I cut off a strip of silicon carbide sandpaper (wet or dry) and put it in the slit with a bit extending for a sanding surface. I used this as an adjustable hone to open up the bushings that shrank a bit when I pushed them into place. So far they've worked for at least a decade though I'm sure the porous bronze bushings aren't nearly as tough on impact as the original Garlock bushings.
