Friend needs help. He needs to know how to replace the PTO seal in his TO-30. He was told that he had to remove the the PTO shaft. I was thinking that you only needed to remove the 4 bolts and the seal housing pulled out? Thanks for your HELP.

A trick I have used successfully to remove the PTO shaft when it was stubborn is to hook an implement shaft, like off a bush hog, onto the PTO and get a friend to help pull. If you have no one to help, you could even back up to the bush hog and hook the shaft up (without hooking up the hitch) and just drive out a foot or so until it pops loose.

In addition to what Jim says, you may find that the shaft won't pull out, this will be due to the PTO shaft being twisted forward of the Pump. This happens when you have a rough operator and he lets the clutch in fast to clear some blockage in the machine, not advisable to do that. If the shaft is twisted it means the tractor will have to be split in two just at the back of the transmission, in front of the seat. You then have to cut it out. Keep your fingers crossed it isn't like that.

Correct on the four bolts... but the whole assembly, shaft and all comes out.. then dissassemble and replace the seal... also, keep in mind that this is below the fluid level so get ready for an oil gusher or do like many do, and put the front end in a ditch or significantly downhill.. The only problem I had with mine was that the bearing housing is a snug fit into the case and was a little stubborn to come loose, but a few taps while pulling gave good results... good luck.. Jim
