I bought a 1953 golden jubilee ford tractor..... When I got it <
br>the positive post was connected to the starter and the <
br>negative post connected to the frame/engine ground. This is supposed to be a positive ground and is hooked in <
br>reverse. It starts and runs great. First half turn and fires
right up. What difference does it make to negative ground it??? shouldn"t this turn the starter backwards???? Can I just reverse the battery wires and make it the original positive ground like it should be. what damage is any is or has been done???? appreciate any help you can pass on. thanks Jim

First things first: Does it still have a 6 volt battery and a generator or has it been converted to 12 volts with an alternator?

If it's still 6 volts, then yes the polarity is backwards and you need to follow the advice already given.

If it has been converted to 12 volts, then there is likely no problem since most (all?) 12 volt conversions use negative ground.

The battery ground connection won't affect the starter but it will affect the primary ignition circuit. If you have a negative ground then the negative coil terminal must be connected to the distributor. Similarly, if you have a positve ground, the positive coil terminal must be connected to the distributor. Your spark energy isreduced approximately 50% if the coil polarity is not correct. That doesn't mean your engine won't run but you will have a weaker spark and harder starting in cold weather, misfire, etc.

The starter is a series motor which means the same current flows through the field and the armature. If you reverse the battery you reverse both currents and the shaft turns the same direction.

To make positive ground you need to swap the battery terminas, the coil terminals, the ammeter terminals, and you must flash the generator to reverse its polarity before you run the tractor. If it has an alternator you can't change the polarity nearly so simply and if you don't know how to change the alternator (sometimes its only by replacement) you will destroy it.
