Should a camshaft gear with two broken teeth (180 degrees apart) warrant a new gear replacement? Thanks you!

Also, I'd want to know why two teeth 180 degrees apart are damaged... for one thing, the crankgear (which turns twice for each turn of the cam) would be contacting with the same tooth at both damaged places on the cam... so I'd look at the crank gear also as a possible cause... (pic is for illustration only... it is not the tractor engine).... Jim

Hey Jim, the crankshaft gear looks good....ie.. not broken teeth, etc. Any ideas as to why this might be so. Would it make sense to go ahead and replace both gears just to be safe?

These gears are normally so lightly loaded that it is a mystery to me why there is damage, that is why I was curious to find a cause. If there is one tooth on the crankgear that is off (maybe from the factory), then it will increase the stress of the passing tooth of the camgear... I would at least carefully inspect the crank gear, because I can't think of any other cause.. but it went 50 years.. it will probably go another 50 with just a new camgear.... so I wouldn't make it a major issue... As a matter of interest - is that motor a flathead V8?

If you don"t fix it bad things will happen.More will break, then it will go out of time, then rods will bend ,then valves will hit pistons, then you will be (fubar).Anyways fix it now while it"s still cheap to do so.
