Hello all,

I've been advised, by a few different sources, that the preferred oil for the rear end on a TEA20 is GL1 90W. However, I cannot find this stuff anywhere including Napa, UAP, etc...

I was told by the people at those stores that 80W90 will do, however on the back of these containers it says that it is GL5, GL4 and GL3 compatible, not GL1. Obviously I no nothing about oil. ;-)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter? What do you guys (and gals) use?

I live in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.

Thanks,

Ivan

I used 15W40 (unable to find 15W30 here in Ottawa). Works just fine. $30.00 at Crappy Tire.

John(UK) usually get in on this, but here is the scoop... GL-1 90 (or 80W) is the original specification (Plain mineral Oil-and it is still available) but a suitable (and perhaps better) substitution is regular engine motor-oil 10W30, 10W40 or 20W50. John will probably tell you that he prefers 10W30 (because of cold climate flowability and the recommendation of his source). I prefer the 20W50 because it is closer to the original viscosity specification (and still thinner in the cold) and it actually has some other wear prevention properties that are somewhat better than the others. GL-5 is not recommended because it has high pressure friction reducer additives (good for the gears) that when combined with moisture, turn into acids so that attacks the copper, brass and bronze (red metal) parts of your transmission. GL-5 would be fine if you could keep ALL of the moisture out (which is difficult with a Fergie, i.e. at the gear shift boot and the control spring seal) but to be safe you should use something that does not have these additives.

Jim

Thanks Anthony,

Napa Canada doesn't carry this. So far, no one in SouthWestern Ontario carries this. However, I've yet to try Case & Drum in London. They might, but they are closed today.

Ivan,
I also live in Southwestern Ontario and have gone over this extensively with John (UK) and tech reps with Kendall and Petro Canada. John (UK) suggests a multi-grade 15W30 oil. However, this beast is not available in Canada due to our cold Canadian climate. Both tech reps investigated the requirements and recommended a 10W30 diesel motor oil. I checked this with John and he concurred. The Petro Canada Rep suggested their Duron 10W30 diesel engine oil. It has higher specs than gasoline engine oils and he assured me that it was thick enough to do the job but is thin enough in cold temperatures to not affect the performance of the hydraulics. It also has the additives that John suggests taking advantage of but does not contain the additives that the GL5 gear oils have that are corrosive to the brass parts in the tractor. this is what i put into my rear end in Sept. and haven't had problems yet (as of last week but it' not -21 yet). Hope that this helps. If you want to discuss this further, email me. I think that you have my email address.
Ron

Hey Ron,

Thanks for your info. Where would you find this Petro Canada Duron 10W30 Diesel oil? Napa and Crappy Tire doesn't carry it.

And no, I don't have your email address.

Thanks,

Ivan

PS- I'm in Ingersoll, you're in Courtland right?

Ivan,
You can get the 10W30 from a Petro Canada distributor in 20L buckets and I think in 4L jugs. Do you have any local Petro Canada fuel/lubricant distributors nearby? This is probably a little more expensive route than going with some of the other suggestions posted so far. However, I had a middle man involved and the extra cost may have been his take on the sale. There are other diesel oils out there like 15W40 that you get easily at Canadian Tire, TSC etc but be careful, some of these are synthetic oils and I don't know if you can run synthetic oils in these tractors. None of my sources suggested the synthetic oils. I also don't know if the non-synthetic 15W40 will work well in our climate. Maybe someone else has tried this. Anyway, I went with the 10W30 in Sept. and so far so good. As has been said many times on this forum, add slowly until oil comes out of the bottom bolt hole of one of the inspection plates to avoid overfilling. Believe me it is easy to overfill the reservoir if you get into too big a hurry. Good luck! I have attached my email if you want more details. Is it time to plow snow yet?
Ron

I use Petro Canadas Durtran tractor and transmission oil been using it for 20 years, cost about 60 bucks a 5 gal pail but they say it is the best for my old tea 2085 so far it has worked great, can run it summer and winter, i change it less often now that every fall like i used to now i change if it gets any milky look to it or every few years depending on use.So the cost works out ok.
