Looking at a TO 20. Engine starts and runs good but after a little while it starts acting as if it is seizing up - starts to tighten up. Could this be the oil pump or something more major? If it is the oil pump, how difficult is it to get to to either replace or rebuild?

Thanks

Bob

If it's seizing up after a feew minutes of running I cna thinkof two scenarios: No cooling and hence the pistons/ring are seizing, or there is a lack of adequate lube oil to the main and rod bearings either due to worn main/rod bearings of a worn oil pump. The former is less seriuos the the later as long as there is no scoring of the cylinder. I have seen overheated engine run for long periods of time trouble free once the cooling was restored as long as the block and/or head wasn't cracked or the cylinder scored.

Assuming it needs a total rebuild, how much would this run me - estimate of course

If you do it your self, the parts will cost around $600.(See the parts people on the left of thispage.) That's rings, piston, sleeves, mains and rod bearings. The big unknown is the ammount of machine shop work you might need. You can't tell that til you tear it down. My guess is that you can figure on another $300-400 in machine shop work. This not include any work on the head. Comming at it from the other direction, a remanufactured short block wil cost you about $1600 exchange. Hope this helps you.

I didn't answer your question about the oil pump. Yes you can drop the pan and get to it from the bottom. Rebuild kit is around $55 for it. If only your bottom end is damaged thenyou won't need sleeves and pistos and ring etc so youmight get by for less than that. But you know, you're going to get pretty far into the engine and I'd be surprised if rings aren't bad too.Need to do a hot compression test to check that out. Unless the previous owner just did that job. he head rebuild will probably cost around $400 if you have to have that done. So a remanufactured replacment engine will be ~$2000.
