TO30 lift problems

I recently purchased a to30 with a hupp under/overdrive transmission. When I try to lift something heavy like a disk. The lift will not raise unless the motor is revved VERY FAST when it is in underdrive. When in direct it will raise with just a few less RPM's. When I put it in overdrive it will raise with about half throttle. I know it is spinning faster when in overdrive which makes it lift easier. I've read and reviewed past topics on lift problems, but can't figure out what is wrong with this one. I don't won't to tear it apart until I know what's wrong if possible. I drained and flushed the transmission when I first got it and replaced with 5 Gallons of GL-1 90W oil. I know it calls for 6, but shouldn't it work fine with what I have? I also have pulled off both inspection covers and can't find any oil spraying anywhere. The cylinder drips a drop about every 2 seconds when the lift is raised under load. The oil just barely swirls towards the rear of the pump where the PTO is turning. That wouldn't be the relief valve spraying I wouldn't think? I have also tried to adjust the lift quadrant by sliding back and forth. It currently has to be set all the way towards the front of the tractor for the lift to raise anything heavy at all. I noticed that the lift handle only uses about 2" of travel to raise or lower the lift. This travel is from the bottom up, not from the top down like the manual states to set the quadrant properly. The handle only feels like it is doing something when the you are at the bottom and pulling up about 2". Sorry, this is so long. I just wanted to inform everyone on what I have seen and checked already. Thanks for any help.

John, I forgot to mention that I have already checked and adjusted the control spring. When I lift up the disk, I can just barely turn the control spring with my hand. Would that be about the right tension? I am almost positive that the oil has the same small amount of swirl above the pto shaft whether the lift is raised or not when the pto is engaged. Thanks for any more help you or anyone may have.

The adjustment is correct. Check the lever itself to see if the key that fixes it to the shaft is still there and that it hasn't turned on the shaft and allowed the lever to move out of its correct position. Also check that the Control Fork is right up against the Pump body when the lever is in the lift position, if it isn't the Control Valve will not be where it should be to allow the oil to be sucked in. If this all fails you could remove the Quadrant from the tractor and check it for wear on the shaft inside and also the part of the Control Fork that it rubs against. this is difficult to see but with a Flashlight it is just possible. I have had something very similar only in the last couple of weeks and it was the Quadrant not being set correctly, I know you said you have tried that but just do it with the bolts JUST slack enough to allow it to move, make sure the Quadrant is as far back as it will go then lever the quadrant forward gently to lower the linkage, just be careful if you have a heavy weight on the tractor, it could drop like a stone. Put the lever to the 2-1/2" mark from the top and lever the quadrant gently forwards. But do check the lever fitting to the shaft first before you try this or you will get a false impression of what is wrong. Let me know if you still have problems.

Have you checked the Draft Control Spring at the rear of the drivers seat for too much play. with an implement mounted on the three point linkage and raised, you should just be able to turn the Spring. From what you say about the Quadrant lever I would think that the Control Spring is at fault. If the oil you say is swirling at the rear of the Pump only does this when you are attempting to lift something heavy then it would appear to be the Safety Valve leaking and requires changing. Because you said yourself that the Disc's are heavy this is the first thing to do, change the Safety Valve and then you will know that is correct. These valves don't usually show any signs of leakage until you are lifting something heavy, a Plow would not make it leak usually. You can't adjust the quadrant unless the Draft Control Spring is set correctly first, this could be the reason that you are working low down in the range of the Quadrant too. Don't attempt to force the adjustment of the Control Spring, it may need the Top Cover removing to do it but ask (email)for the Information for removing the Top Cover then you wont damage anything unnecessarily.Don't strip anything down until you know where the leak (if any) actually is because you wont find any leak when it is pieces on the workbench.
If you wish to discuss this matter further, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
I can send you the information you need to repair it once I know what you find....John
