Hi i have a TEA 20, I think my Fergy may have a blown head gasket, when I start it appears that steam comes out of the exhaust and it has that sweet anti freeze smell to it, after it warms up the steam or white smoke disapears. There is no anti freeze in the oil. I pulled the plugs and did a compression check cylinder #1 is 90 lbs #2 is 105 #3 is 110 #4 is 100. when i pulled the plugs #1 seemed a bit oil fouled also. I guess I need a head gasket and maybe rebuild what do you think? Thanks

Yes it does sound like a head gasket but as Jerry says it could also be a cracked head. You should check the amount the liners stand proud of the face of the Cylinder Block too, they should be between 002" and 008" above the block face, if they are less than this you will have to replace the gaskets under the Cylinder Liners. Don't turn the engine over without the liners clamped down to the block so they wont move as you turn it over or you will damage the gaskets anyway. You should see where it has been leaking when you remove the Head Gasket as it will be water marked where the water has been leaking through.

You most likely have a bad head gasket based on what you're seing with your exhaust. I don't want to sound like an alarmist but there's also the possibility of a cracked head or block. Take it one step at a time and pull your head and check the head gasket. Give the head a thorough going over to look for signs of a crack and do like wise with the block. Cracks in the head are hard too spot and so you may need to have the head magnafluxed to find the crack.

What does your oil pressure look like? Are there any signs of oil burning in the exhaust? When you have the head off, depending on what the valves look like and whether the guides are bad, you might want to consider a valve job. Your compression is not that bad but the 90 psi cylinder is marginal. repeat you compression test with and without ancouple of ounces of oil in each cylinder and see what the pressures are. if they come up significantly, then new rings may be in the picture.
If the head other wise looks good and the problem is obviously a bad head gasket, and your oil pressure is good and there are no signs of oil smoke in the exhaust, you might consider running it for awhile longer.(that fouled plug with the low compression could be where the head gasket is leaking and you're seeing burn antifreeze not oil.) I'd have to know a lot more about the engine and how you use the tractor to give you mdirect advice.

You have a TEA, you have Standard engine and I'm not very familiar with them. John(UK) is a real expert on the TEA series and he can perhaps give you some better advice than I can.

Hi Jerry Thanks for the reply, my tractor does blow some blue smoke but not much, I have never really added much oil to it between changes.I have had this little tractor for 16 years and the oil pressure has always been around 35-40lbs when cold and drops substantially to about 10lbs when warm.I have always thought it was probablly the oil gauge because it does not knock or anything like that.I will try a little oil in the cylinders and redo the compression check, I will be taking the head off in about 2wks when i finish work and will be off for the winter, I will have more time then to work on it. I sure hope the cylinder and block are okay. by the way I forgot to mention that there is oil residue in the radiator, its starting to sound worse with the oil in the rad isn't it?

Ang, when your tractor blows blue smoke is the engine at idle? If so it may be valve guides and seals. Oil pressure at low idle (400 rpm) should should not be below 15 psi. Some of the folks have replaced/rebuilt their oil pumps and regained oil pressure. If your mains are worn, the oil pressure won't improve by fiddling with the pump. You compression numbers aren't terribly bad but rebuilt compression is like 120-130 psi. If your mains are good you can probably run for a year or two more before you have to re-ring it. But you know, if you have to pull the head off, you might want to consider doing now what you're gonna' have to do in the not to distant future. Your money, your time, your choice. Good luck.

Almost certainly head gasket - especially with oil in rad. Don"t run it too long before fixing - a blown gasket causes a hot spot in the affected area that can burn away the head or block locally.

Thanks to all that replied to my inquiry, it looks like I will be doing a little work to my old Fergy in the next few weeks or so. Other than a clutch about 15 years ago and a pto shaft seal leaking last year this will be the first time i will have to get seriously into the tractor. You have to love these old Fergy's. Thanks to all and Happy Holidays
