I have a 59 to 35 with A23C. I rebuilt the engine about a year ago. It starts and runs good, but doesn"t seem to have the power it should. If I advance or retard the injection pump will it help? If so, how do I do this? The scribe line on the pump is about .5inches below the scribe line on the housing. Thanks for the help.

They never had any power to start with. Are you addressing a recent loss of power, or recognising an absence of power? Over the years we tried just about everything - advance pump 10* etc - nothing worked. For a start, the engine is a pre-combustion chamber design - always a disadvantage to starting, power and clean exhaust. Getting the pump delivery increased by 10% will aid starting & power - at the expense of a dirty exhaust and possible cracks on the pre-combustion chamber inserts.

If you haven"t changed the timing chain or altered anything in the timing cover it should be ok to set up by simply slackening the injector pipes and turning the Injection Pump on it"s mounting flange and aligning the scribe marks. You say that the engine is easy to start but lacks power, that is usually a sign that the Pump Timing is retarded, they usually start better retarded but they will lack power. If you are trying to find a point where the engine will start easily and have plenty power I don"t think you will get it with the 23c engine, it is well known for being a bad starter and only fitting heaters to each cylinder appears to improve it. The Pump should really be put back to the scribe line on the mounting flange. I can give you more technical details from the Service Manual if you email me at:-

just remind me what you need me to send when you email please.....John
