First off I am NO mechanic. So be gental with me.
I have a TO-30 and want to convert to 12 v. I have bought the alternator listed in past post and the diode. I have notice in past post I have to change the size of the on the alternator to a larger one. Why? I would not think the tractor would run faster than a car. so why the change?

Thxs

Just use the generator pulley on the GM alt . Fits and works perfect.

If anything the alternator on the tractor needs a smaller diameter, but wider pulley. Its a catalog part at least if not stock from places that supply parts to auto electric shops. I don't know about car parts places, I got mine through the local auto electric shop who assembled the alternator for me.

i think what they mean is a wider pully, not larger diameter, the tractor fan and crank pullys use a wider belt and it wont really go in the alt pully properly, i just ran into this on my jubilee this week, what i did was to go get a belt that works on the alternator it goes deeper into the fan and crank pulleys on the tractor but shouldnt be a problem, i noticed the to 30 fergy im working on about 3 feet away from the ford has this arangement too

Fitting a narrower belt to the wider pulleys can cause you problems. The narrower belt will go deep into the vee of the pulley and it will very often only be driving on the very bottom of the vee, this is not enough friction area. You can check this by looking into the pulleys and seeing if they are polished by the belt in the very bottom, if they are you should fit a wider belt that will ride higher up the pulleys, this will make sure that the fan and water pump are driven correctly and cool the engine properly. Pulleys are available for the wider belts to fit these alternators, you just have to look a little harder for them. Narrow belts in wide pulleys is not good.
