TO30 Lift won't lift after refilling fluid

I have 2 TO30's with the same problem. One of them has a VERY small hydrolic fluid leak, and the other one had it's hose cut. When we filled the lifts up with fluid, the lift wouldn't come up at all. We ran one tractor for 5 hours with the lift in the up position, and it still never came up.

Do you have to prime them once they run out of fluid? What is the deal with this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Was the left side cover removed? If so, the PTO lever engage arm may not be seated in the slide arm to engage the PTO. Make sure the PTO is spining, then proceed with troubleshooting as required. If this sounds like advice from someone who has experienced this, it is!

Thanks to all who have responded so far. We put 30 weight oil in it, and we're going to drain them tonight or tomorrow night and put some GL-1 80 or 90 weight oil in them. Hope that fixes them...I'll let everyone know.

Thanks again...

There is just not that much difference between SAE 30wt motor oil and SAE GL-1 90wt Gear lube. (see Chart above at 40 deg C). Maybe it is enough to cause a problem, but I wouldn't expect it. Jim in OH

First:Explain the hose.Loader? Second:There is oil seeping out of the "vent" or "weep" hole at the bottom between the rear of engine and the front of the transmission which would be normal if you have a leak at either.Third:The fluid just ran out of both of your TO30s.Fourth:5 hours running and not working! I'm taking a shot in the dark here, Does the pto shaft turn. If not you may not have the pump engaged. This has not happened to me personnally but a friend. Pump don't run unless pto is turning.

Did you put in the correct amount of GL-1 mineral oil? It takes 6 gallons if it was fully drained. Does the hydraulic fluid dipstick show the level to be correct? Does the PTO turn when you are trying to raise the lift?

I don't understand your question. Where was the leak and what hose was cut. TO-30's don't have any hoses I'm aware of unless they have a loader on them. In that case they use a separate hydraulic pump that's driven of the front of the crank shaft.
Is the hydarulic pump connected? there is a lever on the left side of the transmission case just below the seat. That has to be engaged for the pump to run. The three point hitch is run off an internal hydraulic pump so any leakage in the hydraulic system would be internal;either a leaking lift cylinder or a gasket/o-ring on the hydraulic supply line to the lift cylinder. Both would be obvious after you removed the side plate and looked at them with the hydraulics operating.
I suppose it would be possible for the lift cover to be cracked and some hydraulic fluid could leak out of there.
It would help if you could describe your problem a little better.

CORRECTION: It wasn't a hose, it leaked around the PTO shaft. I was thinking of a different problem, same tractor :) The other tractor is leaking around the seal in the middle of the tractor, where you can take the tractor apart into two pieces.

To clarify the problem, on both tractors, when the hydrolic fluid ran out, we refilled them. Once we refilled the hydrolic fludi, the lifts no longer raised up. And yes, the hydraulic pump is connected. That's the first thing I checked.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help.

The leaks that you describe, in and of themselves should not be a problem for the 3 pt lift. They sound like seal leaks around the tranny input shaft(if the oil was transhydraulic oil) or engine oil from the rear main seal(if it was engine oil). The leak around the pto shaft is another seal leak.
Do I understand you to say that you let all the fluid run out ("...when the hydraulic fluid ran out, we refilled it....")and then you refilled it? If so,that could be your problem. You may have damaged something by running it completely out of oil. What did you refill with? The proper oil is a GL-1 80 W or 90W straight mineral oil, not gear oil. At this point, I would pull the right side cover off (the one with the dipstick) start the engine and engage the pto. See if the pto turn the pump and look up underneath the top cover for a leaky cylinder(lots of oil coming down from the top is a leak, a few drops is normal) look around to the right front corner with a mirror (Careful! Don't stick you hands in there when the engine is running with the pto engaged.) for a leaky gasket on the pump supply tube. Look near the pump and see if there is a lot of turbulence indicating the relief valve is open. Finally, shut down the engine and reach over to where the control fork connects to the control valve. Sometimes the control fork comes off the control valve or some crud causes the control valve to stick open. You may have to drain off some fluid to check this.

i take it the arms worked fine before you refilled them with gear oil...then wouldn't work after? since it happened in both of your tractors, maybe you put in the wrong type or weight oil? i think the to-30's take straight mineral oil, about 80 or 90 weight. is this what you used?
