I wanted to check in and say howdy. I just bought an old TO-30 yesterday , 1952 vintage serial # 89261 . Not a bad old heap , needs some tidying up of course but its a runner , the motor sounds tight and the sheet metal is in very good shape , although the sun has taken the shine off many years ago . One thing about the desert is not much , if any rust LOL . Guess the first thing I need to do is get a good set of manuals for it . I've been a car mechanic all my life so shouldnt have any problems with this old girl . I'll have plenty of questions for you guys , thanks for letting me in the group .

Body of Message:

Pulled the carb off my TO-30 this morning , cleaned and checked it out . The little screen behind the fuel line inlet brass fitting was plugged up really bad . That was an ordeal getting it clean without buggering up the screen ! Came out nice , and it had a vitron needle in it already that didnt look too old so just cleaned everything out and back together . The throttle shaft is worn a fair bit , I'll get a good rebuild kit later on . Cant wait to get it back on tomorrow AM and see how the old gal runs with a good supply of fuel .

Is there supposed to be a little paper filter in the sediment bowl ? There isnt unless theres another wire screen . I may put an inline filter between the tank and the bowl when I get it home . The tank looks clean inside /no rust etc thats a relief .

Bob in AZ, I too am a new tractor owner. I bought a 1951 TO30 last week and the guys on this site have already given me a wealth of information. Do not be afraid to ask them any question no matter how simple it may sound. As they told me they learned the hard way so we could learn the easy way. Good luck.

Bob, if you live anywhere near Benson, southeast of Tucson maybe I can help I've had a TO30 for 35 years. Bill

rob and bob...as long as i'm on the subject of throwing out warnings...here's another one. NEVER try starting your tractor unless you are sitting on it! as you work on it you'll be tempted to "make sure" it's in neutral, and then hit the start button while standing along side of it. if you make a practice of this bad habit, i guarantee that one of these days you'll be mistaken and start your tractor in gear, and it will start in gear and get away from you. i've seen this happen twice to people who "know" tractors, and we just lost a neighbor to this habit recently. (i won't go into the gorey details)

Good idea Mike . There are 2 very heavy terminals on the top of the bell housing which is probably that safety switch . Its been bypassed long ago by someone . I"ll check it out and repair it . I"ve seen a car or two go through a repair shop when somebody wasnt thinking and did just what you said .

bob...virtually all the fergies i've run across have had this switch bypassed and a start botton added to the dash. i don't know...maybe that switch had a tendency to go bad or something. let me know if you get it repaired and how, as i might think about doing mine as well.
