Several sources say Fergies run well with low oil pressure readings. Has anyone had experience with worn rocker assembly causing pressure problem?

Mine ran at 10 on the guage but then I put a guage directly on the block and it read 20. Had to tear down the engine and the oil pump was shot which lead to all my bearings being shot. The oil pumps were weak on there ole girls. I would check there first...$2500 to rebuild is no fun.

Big, generally I'd say low oil pressure is usually related to worn / excessive clearances in the crankshaft bearings, or oil pump components, not so much worn rocker assbly. My experience has been the oil flow to the rocker is not that great as compared to the lower end of the block.

My TO ran just fine for several years, and probably much longer before I bought it, with ~5 psi hot idle, & ~10-15 psi hot full RPMs with straight 40Wt oil. When I stripped-er down to rebuild, I found no visible damage due to low pressure. My crank, cam, rockers, etc. were all good & in spec. My crank bearing clearances were a bit wide & the oil pump (especially the relief valve) was really shot. I didn't rebuild because I was worried about low oil pressure, but because of that big blue cloud that followed my TO everywhere it went, and having to constantly clean gunked-up spark plugs, and the oil slick it left wherever it was parked, and the oil in the radiator.. but not because of low oil pressure...

If your worried about low oil pressure, make sure your using straight 40W oil, and consider spending ~$30-40 for a oil pump rebuild kit ( off this web site), to see what that does for you. While you have your oil pan down, plasti-gauge your crank main bearings to see how they look.

The book says the pressures should be above 15 psi at hot idle(400rpm). Mine runs at 27 psi hot or cold with 10W40 oil in it.

For whats its worth , mine seems to run about 10 to 30lbs hot and working with 10/40 weight oil . I just adjusted my valves and the rocker side clearance seemed fairly tight . Cold about 20 to 40 lbs .

I dont like seeing pressure that low , but I guess thats par for this machine . I dont hear any knocks are unusual noises .
