On Ebay right now, they are listing a Howard reduction gear add-on for Ford and Fergy tractors. It says it should fit a TO20 or TO30.
The Ebay listing number is 120082977222. Does any one know if these really fit and are they worth having? There have been times when I wished my tractor had a granny gear. Whadaya think?

Yes the Howard will fit the to-20 or 30. They are hard to find and expensive when you do. Parts would almost be impossible to find.

I have a Howard in my 8N and love it. We used to use it with a rotovator, but that's long gone. I abused that thing from 1955 until a few years ago when I heard they are weak. I have a Hupp in my TO-20. It's great too, but slows the PTO to where it is useless. Hopefully someone will respond with whether the Ford will work on a Ferguson. You might also post on the 8N board. There are a lot of very knowledgable people there too.

The basic idea behind the development of the Howard was to slow the tractor down without affecting the PTO speed (i.e., add a reduction after the transmission rather than before it like the Hupp and Sherman). This is very desireable if you are running a rototiller (or other PTO driven implement that works better going slow) but not much else...why? The Howard transmission is just not very strong. It is not made for heavy loading (like plowing or tractor pulling) so if you want to just go slower, it does the job, but if you want to go slow to be able to pull more, look to a Sherman or a Hupp. Jim

Thanks Jim,
I have run a roto tiller with my TO30, and did wish I could have slowed it down, that is why I was considering it. I liked the idea that this unit would slow the tractor but not the PTO. Would this thing be helpful when bush hogging as well? Or is that too much load for it too?
We are in the process of installing a new clutch and rear main seal... so I tought if I wanted to do this mod, now would be a good time before spring, but I don't want to waste my time on it, if it wouldn't gain me much.

Jerry..... ...check out John Smith's tranny page link.

Iff'n memory is correct (I have CRS) the "Howard" used in 8N's is slightly DIFFERENT from the TO's. Has to do with the tranny-shifter thru the 6"round dipstick plate (and something else) I think the way the OPEN-FRAME gearbox (almost like old alarm clock) attaches to the back of the 4-speed tranny case. Conversely, the TO Howard fits the 8N fine.

Howards are rare and fragile and NOT for heavy pulling, they SLOW down the ground speed by a factor of about 2.5..... ..Dell, the NON-authority

Dell,
Thanks for the link... think I have been there before, but failed to book mark it. I looked at the Howard again and based on what you and Jim have said, I think I'll pass on it. Besides, the guy wants allot of money for it and if there is an off chance it won't fit, I sure don't want to buy it. If I get determined to get one, I may wander up to Deleware where my son lives. There is a guy up there with a tractor junkyard I could check out.
