I live in PA and had to park my Fergie outside for a few days. Now I can start it but can't get it into any gear. PTO was left engaged but won't turn and I can't get disengage it either. If I take my foot off of the clutch the engine just conks out on me. The snow will be on us again soon. I need the old girl to push snow and am looking for ideas.

Sounds like water frozen in the hyd. pump. Stop trying to break it free! I know a guy who did and broke the pump into many pieces. Jacobus is right, melt the ice first, then thaw the entire system out and drain all the trans/diff. system, they share common 80w mineral oil. I have done this, and was suprised to find water in my tractor because I store it inside. I found that water leaks in at the rubber boot on the gearshift, and condensate forms naturally in the large open space above the oil level.

It must be major because 20 hp. should move the thickest oil . Has the oil been milky in colour. If their is water in the oil , it will be at the bottom so heat is the best method . You can buy a block heater that is a big magnet. If it is stuck you should do some investigation before it breaks

Sounds like ice in the transmission. Try putting a portable heater under it for a while.Put something around the trac to hold the heat there. If is ice you could break the main drive gears in the rear of it if you keep trying to move it before it is thawed out.

try having someone hold in the clutch while you try to turn the pto shaft by hand.(shut the tractor off first). try it with the pto engaged and disengaged-also try to move the tractor by hand-

It could have water in the transmission that has frozen in there or the shift lever may have slipped out of the rail slot. If you take off the filler plug you might be able to move the shift rail around to get it into a gear. If that does not work try taking the shifter right off it just slips back in the slots. I finally fixed mine by building up the ball on the shifter then grinding it down to fit in the rails. It is quite common in Fergusons to have it stuck between gears as you seem to be.

I would bet on moisture in the transmission case. We have run a TO-30 here since 1951 and never had transmission problems. Warm it up with agood heater. Those magnetic jobbies dont work tooo good and burn up easy. That has been my experieance any way. Good luck.
