To-20 fuel flow problem

My TO-20 seems to go through periods where it will run for about 30 seconds and die. If I return a few minutes later it will start again but quickly die. The longer I wait to restart the longer it will run once it's restarted.

I've cleaned the bell housing that first receives the fuel from the tank. Ensured the line from the housing to the after market fuel filter is clear. The after market fuel filter is clear plastic so I can see the fuel in it.

I only get a trickle into it and it never fills completely.

Should the filter fill completely? Do I need to get the air out of there somehow?

Thanks in advance

If your filter is mounted horizontally then it will only fill with gas to the level of the inlet height, the air cannot escape. If the filter is mounted vertically then it should completely fill with gas. I had same problem for a long time and would loosen the gas line at the shutoff valve and allow the air to sputter out but after running for a while the air would come back. I replaced everything from the gas tank down to and including the carburator, even went to next size larger gas line but stll had same problem, air would replace the gas. The air where ever it is coming from will not travel down and across my shutoff valve to be released into the gas tank. I never have figured out where the air is coming from but I have worked around the problem. I installed a Tee at the shut off valve, with the bottom of the Tee going to the gas line and the top of the Tee going to a vent tube that I run up above the gas tank allowing the air to escape.

Thank you all for the responses.

Mine is installed horizontally as you said. I will do as you described.

This had been addressed many times before and some of the guys have suggested to take the aftermarket plastic filter out of the line and throw it away and use the original setup as Jerry has described. They claimed it cured their problem. I've had no trouble with mine so have no knowledge either way. Just repeating what others have said.

I have an add on fuel filter and it never fills completely but I don't have a fuel flow problem. To check your fuel delivery, open the plug on the bottom of the carb while holding a suitable container under the carb to catch the fuel. Make sure that your tank valve is open all the way. The fuel should CONTINUOUSLY gush out of the bottom of the carb like a cow peein' on a flat rock for at least a minute. If it doesn't or if it's intermittent, your fuel delivery is restricted. I can be caused by a clogged vent in the gas cap, a restricted fuel line, a restriced screen in the carb fuel elbow( sometimes called the "secret filter"), a clogged filter in the sediment bowl("...bell housing"(sic)) or a mess of crap and corruption in the screen at the tank side of the valve( if it has one). A lot of these old machines sat out in the back 40 for years and the tanks get rusty and full of dirt, varnish, etc.

If you chek these items out and still have poor fuel delivery, you might have a hung float valve( a sharp rap with a wooden block on the side of the carb can sometimes free it up), a clogged float valve, or so much grit in the carb fuel bowl that the float won't drop. this will require removing the carburetor and giving it a good soaking in carb cleaner and a thorough blowing out with compressed air and then reassembly.
