OK guys,I got a picture of Duchess on the antique pictures page,give her a look. My question is,how common is the high-low range on the 30? I've been doing some research but finding nothing about gears. I searched this sight and found some old discussion about a 2 speed rear as a retro fit. Did the ferguson ever come factory this way? What we have are 4 forward in low that creep along, and 4 forward in hi that move along,top speed less than 20 mph. Told you all I'd be picking some brains!

I went out with a flashlight to look for some clues. The lever is in the cover with the dipstick,right side behind trans. On the cover, I'll have to clean and see in the day light, I can make out- reduction gear - Hoe Ltd - Essex Eng. From Smiths' page it looks like the Howard model. Possibly Howards Rotory Hoe Ltd.? Maybe one of the UK guys could shed some light.

The Howard Reduction Gearbox was a dealer fitted option and was never fitted on the production line. The Ferguson Reduction box again was a dealer fitted option and wasn't fitted on the line as normal practice. The Ferguson box gave it live-drive on the PTO but the Howard didn't. Rotary Hoes and Howard Rotovators are the same company, there was a company name change at some period during the 1950's originally from Australia they started production in the UK at West Horndon in Essex not too far from Ford of Dagenham. I think they may have had a factory elsewhere earlier than that but I can't remember.

Mike, You are a true gentleman if you will do that.

As I get older I am forgetting things but I find that if I leave it awhile and come back to it, very often I can come straight out with an answer, (well usually I can....lol) Lots of things I can keep on the computer that actually relate to the tractors but things like where Howard was located I don't even bother doing that as it doesn't come up that often.

It sounds like an English Rearend--or otherwise know as the Howard. These were made for tilling and trenching. Yes, comes from the Howard Rotovator name. These are pretty darn rare and quite valuable-if working. They weren't known for thier durability however.
Most often found on the ford "n" series. The unique part is that these were the only reduction units made(that I'm aware of) that did NOT effect the p.t.o. speed. These were located behind the transmission.
There are a few other reduction units available that would slow down the ground speed of fords and Fergy 20's and 30's, however, since the p.t.o ran off the transmission, it was slowed down as well--not what is wanted for tilling.
I've seen these units alone sell for over $1000.00

Hey, thanks for the info! I've been digging through the forum archives and I'm 99% sure it's a Howard. A neat thing, or achilles heal, from what I've read it's something to be cautious if used. I'm assuming it's most vulnerable in the low range?

Correct... straight through and it will be just as strong, but I wouldn't try to load it up much while engaged.... Jim

It is hard to tell with only that much description... check out Smith's page on Sherman's and other types... basically, everything available for the Fords was a bolt-in or easily adapatable for the TO-20 and TO-30. HOwever, different from the Fords, there was nothing available from the Ferguson factory (the Sherman was a factory option for Ford if ordered). However, Ferguson dealers were more than happy to provide the different tranmission options, so many were sold new with such (even though not "factory" installed). Hope this helps.. JIm
