Newby here.

What is the difference in the above tractors? I can't find an explanation anywhere.

I have one that I call a 2085, but perhaps that's not the correct label?

Anyway, mine is stuck in gear, and the clutch has not been disengaging recently, so I need to do some work on it.

Are there any articles on replacing a clutch? I know the chassis needs to be split.

Thanks

TO 20's were made in Detroit all the others were made in the UK. A 2085 is a TEA really with an 85mm bore engine but for Canada it was badged as 20/85. If it is stuck in gear, take out the transmission lever by removing the two nuts holding it in place and if you look into the hole underneath you will see the selectors, one will be out of line with the other two, just gently lever it in line and then replace the transmission lever. If the clutch is not separating, check that the Clutch pedal has 3/8" free play in it, measure the clearance between the pedal and the underneath side of the footrest. To adjust it, slacken the clamp on the front end of the Clutch pedal and turn the square end of the shaft clockwise slightly to reduce the amount of free play and see if that helps. If there is a lot of free play and you adjust it you may not need to take the engine out. If you do need to carry out those repairs, email me for the information you need to do it. You will need to adjust the engine governor after you rebuild the tractor, I have the information for that too. If you need this information, email me at:-

I was able to remove the gear lever, and yes, the three slots were not lined up. However, I was not able to align them, and did not want to use force.

Would trying to rock the tractor work, or jacking up the rear end and trying to move a rear wheel?

I was moving snow with a scaper blade when the tractor stuck in first gear.

Thanks

If you have an implement on the rear linkage and it is lifted it doesn't help the situation, as Jim says if it is sticking as bad as you say, you can try disengaging the PTO lever, if that fails try rocking the tractor, usually they fall in to line without too much trouble. You obviously have some load on the transmission and that is preventing you moving the selector. When you change gear, just be careful not to lift the transmission lever. While the lever is out of the tractor check the end to see if it is worn, most likely it is the selector that is worn but if you are just careful changing gear and don't hurry it you will find that it can last a long time before you have to change the selector.

Yes, there is some load on the tractor.

I have disconnected the scraper blade, and the PTO shaft turns freely (disengaged).

I will try to rock the tractor, but not sure how to do that. I may need to wait for some of the snow to melt or clear away.

Thanks for the advice from you and Tim.

Tim - I once owned a TR3, now have a 1966 MGB. Wish I still had the TR3 - and the Bugeye, and the MG-TD, and the TR6 - all cars I once owned.

That load is what is holding it in gear. It is easy enough to rock the tractor on flat ground but if you have it stuck in snow it will be difficult for you.Have you got a neighbour who can pull you out, just keep your foot on the Clutch pedal and it should be ok unless there is a lot of play in the pedal like I said earlier today, in that case adjust the pedal before you try to pull it out..John

Robert,
Check that the pto is disengaged; it could be easier to deselect first gear.

Thanks for the great replies.

Mine has a Standard engine (bulletproof like the TR-3 I used to own).

I'll take the tips re: freeing the gears, and see what happens.

This is a very helpful website.

Roger, The FE35 never had a Continental engine they were fitted with an 87mm version of the engine that was fitted to the TEA tractors. This was made by the Standard Motor Co. who made the tractors for Harry Ferguson and later Massey-Harris-Ferguson.Depending on the compression ratio of the engine fitted it produced around 37hp and 34hp on the PTO, the high compression engine produced 38hp and 35 on the PTO.

Error in the previous message : read TEA-2080 and TEA 2085 instead of TE 2080 and TE-2085
