I am looking to buy a tiller for behind my TO20. Anyone out there had any experiance with this setup. Is the Ferguson ground speed slow enough for using a tiller? Should I be looking at a 4' machine, or can I use a 5'? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for all the information. Sounds like a good reason to look for an upgrade in the tractor. I surely appreciate it.

I have a tiller behind my TO20 and it works fine. The tractor is a little fast but the way i do it is i plough my garden in the fall(always have) and till when it's time to plant the first veggies.Which here is Potatoes for me.The soil is like sand afterwards.Very nice and even ground when i'm done.As long as i have my tiller, the disc will be collecting dust.No more making 2 or 3 passes over the garden,it's done in the first swipe.

As the other have suggested and may not have said straight out.

No a TO-20, TE/TEA-20, nor a TO-30 has a slow enough ground speed for a tiller. You will need a minimum of a TO-35 or later machine.

That said there are aftermarket reduction gear add on's that can slow the ground speed down to use a tiller. However, the cost to get one may dictate looking at purchasing an upgraded machine... i.e TO-35 or doing your garden prep with a plow and disk.

jeff...that's exactly the reason i ended up with my to-35. my to-20 just wouldn't go slow enuf for a tiller. but do all to-35's have the hi-lo tranny? i'm not sure if the standards had them or only the deluxe 35's. you'd have to have the lo range to slow it down enuf to till.

The difference between the std. and the delux was wether it has the two stage clutch or not. i.e. live power.

jeff...looked it up and answered my own question. the standard DID come with the hi-lo six speed tranny.

Your 20 will need a Howard gear reducer to get the tiller working properly.
The Howard allows the tractor to travel at a lower ground speed while maintaining a higher PTO speed with which to utilize the tiller with.
A howard gera box will last as long as the only thing you ever do with it is pull a tiller. No stump pulling or other silly tricks. You might find one on E-Bay for about $1,000. They are rare
and can be difficult to locate. Your next best bet might be a bottom plow and have a go with that.

John (UK) recently sent me excellent details and advice on reduction gears. There are traps for the unwary, as Bruc suggests. I suggest you contact John for advice. And if the US is like Australia, you'll need a good bank balance to buy what you need!

Hasten slowly!
