Pulled the steering mast, then the engine and found a few problems to begin with. I neglected to remove the steering wheel while the mast was still attatched to the tractor...Any swift ideas on how to remove that? Next was the Hupp sitting above a puddle of fluid inside the bell housing. Is it possible to still locate Hupp seals/ Looks like I get to pull the Hupp and replace the trans shaft seal also, No? I especially enjoy the square plug on the top of the Hupp. How is it possible to access the fill plug once the tractor is reassembled? Fill it and forget it? What is the proper fill level for the Hupp and what weight oil does it use? Next step is roll the engine out of the way and pull the clutch and brake shafts to remove the Hupp and replace bushings. (When I get the money for all this) Then we pull the hydraulics for a quick look and see how far that ignorance takes me.
have a good one!

I'm no Hupp expert... but what I've read about Hupp's & Sherman's is that they swap oil with the tranny, as in use the same oil. There may be a slinger in the Hupp that helps move the oil in/out into the tranny. May just need a new seal between the tranny & Hupp. The fill plug is for the initial install only.... but like I said, I'm no Hupp expert.

As for seals/bearings, if you can get the old ones out or mic them, you should be able to go to any good industrial supply house and get new ones. Around here, there is a place called Bearings Inc. that I have gone to a couple times with bearing race remnants that they were able to mic & pull up a replacement.

Can't help you on the steering wheel, except lots of penetrating oil, big hammers, maybe a big gear puller. It mearly sits on a tapered shaft, not threaded... should pull right off.... once you break through the 50 years of rust that has welded it onto the steering shaft.

Thyanks for the reply!
I am about to find out very quickly as I might pull the unit for a leaking seal. Another tractor site has a Hupp manual and in my ignorance, it is as clear as mud.
Have a good one!
