I just bought a 1955 ferguson model to 35. I checked the trans/gear lube stick with engine off(later found it should have been running)and sometime later discovered oil leaking from the small approx 1/4" hole on the bottom of the pan.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause the leak.It will leak when engine is running (small drops) and while the engine is off but to a lesser degree.

Which hole is it leaking from, the one under the flywheel or the one just in front of the transmission. under the flywheel it is from the engine under the transmission it is leaking from transmission. The leak will be due to the seal (whichever it is) being cracked due to age and requires changing to cure it. You can keep checking it every day as you should do anyway, it is more annoying than anything, it doesn't really warrant stripping down until the leak is getting noticeably worse.

Pretty common, splitting a tractor is not for the faint at heart but certainly do-able. I just split my 8n in 5 hours which is no spead record but I've split a couple.

The front seal of the tranny is not too bad to replace, if its the rear main on the engine thats a much bigger animal. My 35 is leaking also and I'm trying to id the oil as to motor or tranny.

Your call. My 35 sat for a long time before I bought is and the leak may be increasing now that its being run. The seal probably has dried out on mine

It is actually GOOD that it is dripping--well, kind of. That hole usually has a cotter pin dangling from it to keep it open. The bad news, you most likely have a seal going out between the rear of engine and transmission. Have to split engine and tranny to fix. If it just a few drops, most people keep running them and keep an eye on fluids. The reason it is good is because without that hole, and a leaking rear seal, that area (clutch and flywheel) would eventually fill with oil and really screw things up.
I'll let others jump in as to how ergent you need to fix this. congrats on the fergy.
