On my TO30 Continental engine, I found cracks in the block webs at the bottom of the cylinders. You can't see this until you pull the liners. Looking at the corrosion, it appears they have been cracked for a long time, but only recently started to leak. I put Loctite # 291 on the cracks (it "wicks" into cracks) and will coat the bores in the block and the outsides of the liners with silicone seal when I install the liners. I don't think structural strength is an issue at this spot.

I also don't think this resulted from overheating. This is at the bottom of the cylinders, where there is much less heating than at the top, where there are no cracks.

If anyone has other ideas about repairing this, I'm interested...

Good luck with that!

These Continntal's were prone to cracking if overheated. Usually the cracks are at the top of the block between the cylinders. The old fix was to drill through the water jacket between the cylinders and put threaded tension rods laterally across the block and tighten them with nuts. That pulled the cracks together. My original engine had these and you could tell because of the nuts on the outside of the water jacket. The modern fix is to do a furnace braze repair of the block.

Yeah, if the silicone doesn't work I'll have to pull the engine and get it welded. I've got time to experiment...

When I pulled the liners, I found sludge up to about 1/3 of the liner height. Could be block sealer. I don't use it, but a lot can happen in 55 years. Maybe something loosened up the sludge and let it leak. I expected to find bad liner seals, but they look (old, but) good.

During the cooler time of the year,a small amount of condensation will occur in warm engine crankcase,a small amount of water/white milky drip out of vent tube is normal. Gregg/Oh.

Gregg after using the tractor this morning i found water coming from vent tube at a steady drip. I pulled the oil stick and found water in the oil.The mixture of oil and water was about one inch over the full line. I guess maybe the head gasket is bad. A while back i tightened the head up because i had a oil leak.
I guess i will pull the head off and see if i can find the problem any suggestions

monty...i sure hope you didn't crack that block. when you pull your head, check between the cyliners real close, that's where they crack. i hope it is only the gasket.
