starter / ring gear problem

My TEA 20 starter is jamming on the ring gear. I have had the starter rebuilt but the problem persists. Previously if the bolts were loose on the starter it would work fine. Now jams repeatedly. Could the bendix when engaged change its length? I previously have measured the distance from the housing to the ring gear and the bendix extended but it appears to be the same? Perplexed, frustrated and needing my garage space back.

Had that problem many years ago. Can't remember the fix. Think it may have been a sticking helical spline sleeve?

My starter was working perfect but when I pulled it recently during the tractor restoration found the pinion chewed up. Bought new ring gear and miraculously, the local auto electrician had a genuine, new Lucas starter pinion amongst his old stock!

You don't say if it is a 6 or a 12v starter, they are completely different so we need to know...John

The tea 20 is a 12 volt system.

If it is sticking as you say, wash the Bendix in petrol and get all the oil off, any oil will collect the dust off the Clutch. Try it outside (in a vice)the tractor to see if it will fly-out and back, do that a few times to make sure it is free. Are you certain it is just the Bendix sticking, is it possible that the operator is catching start as he comes out of reverse, it is possible to adjust the Starter switch slightly to help this problem if that is what it is.

The starter has been completely rebuilt so the Bendix works fine. The problem is locking up the ring gear....engages and jams... suggestions have ranged from filing down the ring gear after 30 years of engaging? to leaving it loose , as to acomodate the "old sloppy" parts.. keep the suggestions coming folks.. and thanks.Bob

Have you actually checked the Bendix like I said though, the starter could be fine until you put it the tractor.

Will bench test this morning and also check the teeth on the ring gear where it was stuck. If it looks damaged will take a dremmel tool to it smoothing it out and rotate the ring gear a full revolution checking and smoothing. Also will take any oil or debris off the shaft of the bendix drive. Thank you gentlemen for your suggestions and will report later this am.

John is correct. The starter Bendix should be completely oil free - I've also had that problem. At least you can unwind the Bendix when it jams by using a spanner on the square on the front end of the armature.

My starter worked fine, no problem at all, no noises despite the chewed up pinion. At John's suggestion I checked the ring gear as best I could and it feels like there is little damage. But the new ring gear was only (the equivalent of) US$60 and as I have the tractor mostly disassembled it is no big deal to split the transmission, change the ring gear, inspect the clutch and also at John's suggestion, change the rear main seal and gear box input seal.

Did the bench test and the starter worked fine. Whipped off all oil from the bendix drive and checked to make sure the shaft was true with no bend to it. Also took a file to all the teeth on the ring gear one at a time. Reassembled and "click" it locked up after a 4 " rotation of the ring gear. So back to the drawing boards. Checked the power to the drive and making sure the battery was at full power: no Difference. Perplexed in Perth

I presume the brush cover isn"t touching the block somewhere & tilting the starter in? Otherwise I"d suspect a wrong bendix - sounds like it"s too deep in mesh.
