My TE-20 won't start unless I pull it. Than it starts right off. Any ideas? Thanks.

Artie, I have the same problem, but I'm waiting for drier weather to work on my '49 model. Please be sure to post what works for you, then I can try it. (In school, I always copied from my neighbor, too.) Thanks! Tex

My 30 did the same. The origional ign sw was long gone and a toggle sw was installed in its place. There was corrision on the lug connectors at every connection, this created enough voltage drop that when the starter was running the coil saw only a couple of volts, with out the load of the starter the coil got full voltage. Run a jumper wire from the battery + to the hot side of the coil, this bypasses the ign switch and all the connections related to it, and try the starter. If it happens to work, you then know where the problem is.

Assuming it cranks with the starter at a good turnover rate, inspect the points & condenser for corrosion on terminals and burned or glazed contacts. You can check the point contunity, however, a bad condenser is harder to check, Simpler to buy an new one. I buy parts at the local autopro store. Clean & flatten if necessary, regap the points to.022".The distributor cap should be clean & dry,as entire distributor interior should be. You may rule out shorting, since the tractor starts when pulled. My TO30 had a loose battery cable at the battery clamp, looked ok, but wouldn't start when the engine was hot, or cold weather arrived. When I first bought the tractor, there was a lock washer on a starter switch terminal, when current heated up the weak connection the washer collapsed causing a looser? one. I hope I helped.
