I know that this has probably been discussed before but...

Hitch lifts backblade well and strong;then tops out and then falls. This then repeats. I have heard that this could be related to a pressure relief valve problem.

Do you mean when it gets to the top it starts to drop again or does it "Bounce", lifting and lowering in quick succession. If it is a Relief Valve leaking it would leak all the time and would not hold at all. To check that, just lift and put your foot on the Clutch if it falls you have a leak, maybe not the relief valve but a leak anyway. You need to check for a leak on the system, if you need the information on how to do that just email me and I will send you the information, just give me as much detail as you can as to what it is doing when you mail.

BTW. This happens when the pto is running and the clutch not engaged. I can add weight (bushhog) and it will still lift. It seems to stay up well if I only position it part way up.

I think you mean TO-20. No such thing as T-20 Ferguson.
First of all, the hydraulic pump is driven by the PTO shaft so the pto shaft needs to be connected to the engine to have three point hitch lift.
It sounds like you may have a leaking or cracked lift cylinder. The cylinder is at the "open" end of the cylinder in the max lift position. If the relief valve was stuck open it would lift very slowly or not at all.
The only way to check id to open up the access plate on the right side, start the engine and engage the PTO and look up where the cylinder is at for a copious quantity of fluid running down when the lift is in the raised position. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES STICK YOUR HANDS INTO THE HYDRAULIC RESERVOIR WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. Normal is a few drops. Also, using a mirror and a flashlight, try to look for a leak near the right front corner of the resevoir. The high pressure supply tube seal can leak in this area You can also look near the pump. If the relief valve is stuck open it will be noisey and there will be a lot of turbulence from the fluid exiting the relief valve. I don't believe that's your problem.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes it is an TO-20. Bad typing. I am aware that the pump is pto driven. I have owned a 53 golden jubilee for some time. They are very similar. Luckily never any issues with the Ford.

Is this lift cylinder repair a difficult or expensive problem to solve? This is a machine that I am considering buying and need info for negoitation.

You have to take the lift cover off and to do that I believe you have remove the bolt that holds the spring on and they are usually rusted badly. I don't think its terribly expensive if you can do it yourself but if you have a shop do it it could be. I have never had to work on mine so someone with more experience than I could give you a better answer.
