Restoring my 1953 TEA2085 and found the timing case cracked. John (UK) feels something came adrift from the governor and cracked the case, although the throttle and governor appear to be working normally.

From the gunk I cleaned off, I suspect the crack has been weeping oil for some years.

Anyone struck this before and more importantly, what disasters did you find when you removed the timing case..... ....???

The case looks repairable with epoxy, although new cases are not that expensive.

Who sells new covers? BARECO says they no longer have them.

As I stated a few post up, I had the governor come apart on my engine, but the damage is not like yours. Mine jammed between the chain and lower sprocket, causing the whole bottom of the front cover to be knocked out and the timing chain broken. Yours looks quite minor and fixable with epoxy. But I would caution you to take it apart and replace the governor if you don't know it was done recently. It would be $100 now, vs. $500 later. It looks to me like you'll have a fun time getting that front pulley off. Mine was impossible, but it was a non-original part used to drive a front pump. Get yourself a spare pulley just in case.

Thanks for that information. I'll pull the front end off this weekend. The case is repairable although new replacement cases are not that expensive.

A local friend is the IH Case dealer - I'll borrow a puller off him.

It should pull okay, but it looks like you have the nut welded on. That has to be cut off with a small air grinder, then you might be okay, or you might have a shrink fit due to the heat. Take it easy on the pulley.
