I have a 1952 TO-20 and I am looking for some help fixing the following problem with the hydraulics.

1. at idle, the 3-point will not raise completely with load.

2. engine off, 3-point drops down completely.

3. when operating with a bush-hog, constantly having to adjust 3-point hight. It will not stay at a constant level.

I have a copy of the owner's manual, but it does not go into enough detail on how to adjust the hydraulics. It seems to me that the flow valve is the problem, but I don't know enough about the tractor and/or how to change the valve.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Ferguson did not have position control from the factory but you now can have a good positive control of the height of the three point hitch by buying one of my ZANE THANG position controls.

Click on the logo link below for more infomation.

The 9N-TO Ferguson lift has no position control. To maintain the lift at a given position the hand must constantly be on the control lever to continually re adjust. I can fix that for you if you will Email me at wzsherman@aol.com or see the link

1.Either you have a leak or the Pump is worn from that description, there just isn't enough pressure
2. That tells us you have a leak, so that is why you don't have enough pressure.
3. You can't operate a Bush-hog like a plow or cultivator, the hydraulics will do the job but they need setting up differently so the tractor will automatically control the height.
If you need the Information to trace the leaks and how to operate the Bush-hog on your tractor email me so I have an address to send it to, just remind me again of the problem when you do.

Since the TO-20 does not have position control, it will not hold a fixed position unless you adjust it via a method attributed to marlowe, a regular contributor in this forum. (It also presupposes that your system is working correctly.)I suggest you look in the archives for the method or perhaps somebody will provide it for you.

Regarding the first and second questions, it's possible that you have a leaking lift cylinder caused by worn piston rings/seals or a cracked lift cylinder. You can also have a blown seal on the supply pipe to the lift cylinder. How fast does the lift drop after you shut down the engine? If it drops immediately it's likely caused by one of the above. To check it out, open up the right side access cover, engage the PTO lever and start the engine. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU STICK YOUR HAND(S) IN THE HYDRAULIC RESERVOIR WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING! With a flshlight illuminating the cylinder which is attached to the lift cover, look upward for copious quantities of hydraulic fluid coming from the are of the lift cylinder. A few drops is the normal leakage. If you have serious leakage then you'll have to remove the lift cover nd correct it. You need to geta copy of the factory version of the Ferguson Shop Manual(~20.00) for directions on how to do this orr perhaps John(UK) will send the instructions to you.
Hope this helps.
