I just bought a Ferguson tractor and I'm still trying to figure out what model it is so that I can get some parts and manuals for it. Until that happens I think the hyd. has gotten water in it. It's a milky/gold color. I'm thinking that the tractor is a TO-20, what type and how much oil will it take to change it.

Rob it is a good idea to clean out the water contaminated oil. Also look for where the water is comming in. Poor rubber seals around the shift levers is a prime area, new rubber boots may be in order, I also put a bucket over the shift levers when not in use.

When changing out the transmission oil to clean out water contamination be prepaired for a multi day job. Give the oil time to seap out of nooks and cranies and the cleaning agent time to work.

Also as you will be draining the rear end. Now is a good time to plan to replace the PTO seals, and fix any hyraulic lift issues you may have. If the lift does not stay up for at least 1 min after the the pump is shut off you may want to look for and fix any leaks.

Attached is a cleaning procedure I wrote several years ago and seems to work for people.

Note the Gallon or two recommendation at the end of my procedure is for how much diesel/Kerosene to use as a cleaning agent... Not the amount of oil to replace.

Rob, get the serial # off the I.D. plate on the dash behind the steering wheel and check the "serial numbers" link over on the left under "research & info" box to pin down the model.

Both the TO20 & TO30 use 6 gallons of 90 wt. GL-1 straight mineral oil. Not the EP grade tranny oil like you might add to a truck tranny or differential... that is different stuff. Try to stay away from GL-5 mineral oil, it may have a couple additives in it that aren't desirable in your TO. NAPA sells GL-1 mineral oil, so does TSC. I've heard some WallMart's sell it also. It's the same oil that was in the Ford 9N/8N tranny. Some guys run 15W30 or 15W40 engine oil in the tranny, especially for the guys that live "up North" where it gets darn cold in the Winter and makes for sluggish hydraulics. Either is fine, it's up to you.

The color you describe is pretty typical for old tranny oil. Your doing the right thing by changing it out. Pull the ~6 inch side plate where the dip stick goes through when you drain your tranny, make sure you get all the sludge, etc. out of there to insure a problem free 3 point lift.

Pretty sure it"s the GL-1 about the only place I can find it is NAPA part # 65-205 and I believe it takes about 6 gallons to completely refill

6 gals for the TO-20 and 30...8gals for the TO-35. you need to identify your tractor before starting anything.

Where do I add fluid for the rear end? in reply to mike a. tenn., 04-10-2007 14:31:09
Hey guys, I just bought a Ferguson T035, 1955 model. Nice little tractor, I"m trying to become familiar with it. On this tractor, how do I add fluid to the rear axle/three point lift, and what kind does it take? Do I add it through the big fill plug on the trnsmission, or somewhere else? I notice it has a drain plug for the transmission and one for the rear end. The transmission is a high/low type. What I want to do is replace the fluids in both the transmission and rear end/three point lift, any advice would be great. Thanks!!

Update- Where do I add fluid for the rear end? in reply to LanceJ, 04-11-2007 09:57:47
Hey guys, I just called 3 Massey dealers here in KY and got 3 different responses as to what type of fluid I should use in the tranny of my TO35. One said GL-1 mineral oil, one said regular GL-5 80w90, and finally one said to use Massey's proprietary "Permatran" fluid. It seems that the Permatran is the safest bet, It costs a little more than regular tractor/hydraulic fluid.

As a Final note, Big Dean says that the GL-1 is correct for these tractors, but sometimes the paraffin in this oil will gum up valves. He says the modern Perma-Tran 3 is acceptable as long as your hydraulics are in good shape. Big Dean is a retired MF mechanic, there's a link to his helpful website in one of these forums. Thanks everybody!!

lance...you put what you want in your tractor, but the M1103 SAE-90, straight mineral oil from massey ferguson is the oil specifically made for your machine. GL-1 is just the Napa version of it. perma-tran IS what the later model MF's use, like the MF 100 series tractors. the other recommendations on this thread for cold climates work well too....and the info that has been sent to you on this "FERGUSON" forum is coming from people very knowlegable about ferguson model tractors. do what you think best.

lance...drain and fill as john(uk) described. some extra tips...plan on letting it drain at least overnight to get as much old fluid out as possible. if you find that there is a lot of sludge in the fluid you might want to pull the side cover that the PTO engage lever is in and clean out the trans housing. the drain plugs are magnetic so make sure you clean them well. when filling, after about the first 4 or 5 gallons, go slow! give the fluid a chance to migrate back in teh trans or youll end up overflowing and makin' a big mess. (don't ask!)

There are two drain plugs on this tractor transmission, drain when as hot as possible to get more out. Fill through large plug near to transmission levers with 8 us galls GL1-90W oil or 15W/40 Multi-grade. Make sure that the rubber boots on the levers are good or you will get water in, also check the rubber boot on the Top Link Rocker behind the seat and replace if damaged. If you need the information on the correct way to use the Hydraulics in this tractor, email me at:-

tell me what you need in case I forget....John
