Hello all.

From time to time here on the forum we all see that some people ask questions about the Continental engine, cracked between cyl. 2 and 3 if I can remember correctly.

I wonder, does this count only for the Continental engine used in the TO 20, or does it count for the TE 20 as well ? And, what is the reason for the cracking, is it just cracking from old age and a lot of use, or is ice and frost giving a helping hand here ?

If the engine block is cracked between the two and three cylinders at the bottom it is from freezing.

I have one that I bought because all the wisdom around here said it was not repairable. I bought it in 1964. I took the lead out of 22 bullets and drove the lead into the cracks with a blunt punch. I put new seals in the sleeves and new pistons, sleeeves and rings and when I got it together I put a can of Bar's stop leak in it. I have not had a minutes trouble out of it since.

Bill, the Continental Z120 is used on the TO-20 and the TE-20 is the same engine. They don't do well if they are overheated and frequently crack between the cylinders near the top of the block.

Bill;

We run 2 Fergusons from 1948 untill 2002. Both were bought new.A TE 20 and in 1952 the TO30. We never had a problem with the blocks.
If a block cracks the engine either didnt have enuf antifreeze or it got too hot. We never run our tractors hard or at wot. We would run at about 2/3rds throttle.And not overload the engines.
