Rear axle shims

Anyone know how to proper adjust the shim stack for the TO20 rear axles? I am rebuilding mine since the previous owner did not know what he was doing. He did not use gaskets, just a little silicon. Therefore I am sure that the shimming is not correct. I have a new full set of shims so I just need the procedure.

Thanks

This is for the TEA but I think the same procedure applies.

In regards to mm2007 rear axles seals I have an I&T shop service manual for the te20,to20 and to30 which could help you out. I replaced my seals and used a felt tip marker on the inside of the axles to see if they rubbed together. It made a little more work but I was sure that there was no friction if the marking was not disturbured. The manual calls for 0.002 to 0.008 recommended clearance. I also have the original (copy write 1949)Ferguson Tractor Operation and Maintenance manual for the TO20 which is about 50 pages. The I&T maual has about 32 pages and detailed specs. I could photo copy the original if you email me. mm2007 did you get yours intalled?

Gary and others thanks for the information. The felt tip is a good idea. I have ordered a manual but I seem to get more practical and clear advice from this forum.

Ric1 is correct. I think the description in the archives is mine, although others may have said it as well. With both axles up, when shimmed correctly, if you turn one wheel, the other wheel should turn the opposite way. If the other wheel doesn't turn at all, you are shimmed too much. If it turns the same way as the one you are turning, they are too tight and thus not shimmed enough.

Check the archives - there is a a very good description of both how and why. I believe it was a John(UK)response to the same question as yours.

if i remember correctly without the shimms the ends of each axle will rub together when installed .with both rear tires off and on blocking of some sort with both axles in place you should be able to turn on in any direction and if the one on the opposite side is turning the same direction that means there touching together so add a shimms equal on each side untill the other axle turns the opposite direction as the one you are turning that tells you they are no longer touching together.im not sure im 100% right so wait for other replys befor jumping into it thanks hope this helps
