Ferguson TO30 Throttle/Engine Problems?

I recently took possesion of my grandpa's 1951 Ferguson TO30. It has new plugs, new radiator and a few other minor parts which were intalled by a mechanic. The tractor starts up great and idles normal. When I take off the engine will run at normal pace then cut down on its own. It is almost like a ghost is pushing the throttle level for me. The tractor will slow then the engine will idle up again. This is happening when using a bushog or just putting across the field. It does not seem like it is bogging down but more like something is wrong with the throttle or carb. Love the tractor and would like to fix this myself. Any suggestions? Also, was curious if I could use reverse while bushog/pto is engaged? Thanks.

Thanks to all who gave their insight on my problem. I have checked several things and still have the same problem. Now the radiator broke loose, I have a leak around the PTO lever and a few other minor things. The tractor sat for about 6-8 years with only being started a few times. I am going to take it back to the mechanic who recently did some work on it. Will post his findings.

Check your fuel flow to the carb. Chances are it is like mine was - gas tank full of rust particles slowing down the fuel until intermittently, or maybe could be your gas cap is not venting properly. These are easy things to check. Others mention the throttle control friction disk as a possible culprit, but you say the tractor speeds up on it's own without touching the throttle lever again?

Yeah, the tractor will speed back up without the throttle lever moving. I even tried holding the lever wide open and it still sped up and slowed down. Thanks for your help.

Now I'm thinking governor. Is the governor compensating spring missing (it's the smaller of the two)? Maybe someone else with more knowledge will chime in, but that's what else I'd check besides looking for steady fuel flow.

There is a friction disc that is below the dash on the throttle actuator rod behind the metal disc. The throttle lever position is maintaine by the friction o fthe cork disc. If it gets shiney tht the friction reduces and it llows the throttle to back off. If your throttle lever position is changing when the engine speed drops than that's the problem. The other possibility is that the there is a spring that keeps pressure on the trottle friction disc and that may need adjusting. Get your self a Ferguson Shop Manual (~$20) and the instructions are in there for adjusting the throttle. Or wait til John(UK) answers and he might be able to send you the instructions.

As the previous writer said. Don't mow without an ORC(Overunning coupler). The PTO is transmission driven on this tractor so when you try to stop, stepping on the clutch only disconnects the engine from the driveline, not the rotary cyutter. The rotating inertia of the cutter will contiue to drive the tractor making stopping next to impossible, unless you hit an imovable object! SO for safety sake, GET AN ORC FOR USE WITH THE PTO!

The friction disk which maintains throttle position may be worn or oily. It is located below the oil pressure gauge. You can use reverse with the bushhog, but you may have to wait for it to spin down before reverse will engage. A REALLY good ORC will help this.
