Hey fellows,
I know this is a older massey board But is there anybody that can tell me if there is a clutch adjustment on the MF 231 I just bought? I have a two stage clutch, first stage I have to ingage and leave it for a couple of seconds to advoid a little gear grinding, how ever it does stop the tractor fine and the tractor pulls good. second stage I almost have to stand up out of seat to engage to stop all power. I feel like I've been at the gym working my left leg out after doing some mowing.

There are two adjustments, one for the main clutch and one for the PTO clutch. The main clutch should be set with a clearance of 3/8" when hot between the pedal and the part the pedal rests against. The PTO setting is through the bottom cover and it should be .090" on all three of the adjusters, you can close this clearance in .005" "steps" until the grinding stops, do not go less than .065" clearance, if it still wont stop grinding, the Clutch assy. must be worn and needs changing. Something else that will cause the grinding problem is thick oil in the transmission and Hydraulics.

If the tractor pulls good has strong take off when you let the clutch out, can the clutch assy still be warn out? Is it bad to grind a gear here and there? I have about 3 or four inches of play in clutch pedal before you engage the first stage of the clutch, I have to wait a second or two to avoid grinding, the same on all the way down to stop all power, I have to wait a second to avoid pto gears grinding. Does that mean anything?

It can be worn on all the linkage points, it all adds up to the Clutch not opening as it should or as much as it should do. But the free play in the pedal seems to be rather a lot, you need to adjust this with the tractor HOT, don't do it when its cold or when it gets hot there may not be enough free play and then the release bearing will be running all the time and if it is really tight the Clutch will start to slip. So adjust the pedal and take some play out of it when it is HOT and see how it performs then. This won't make a lot of difference to the PTO clutch and if that still grinds you will need to reset it as I told you in the last email. When you engage gear do you close the throttle, because it is the gearbox spinning over that is causing the grinding and you are having to wait for it to stop, so if you close the throttle you may not have to wait as long. Never ride with your foot on the Clutch pedal because although you don't realise it the pedal is moving as you bounce on the seat, this causes wear on the linkage and it keeps the release bearing running. If you need more information, email me at:-

as I can't send you anything on here....John
