Well, we got the old girl fired up today and while she isn't running as nice as I would like it to, she is running none the less. The carb will need a kit I am sure. We took it apart last night and soaked it in lacquer thinners and it cleaned up to look like new. But the tractor sat for so long that the fuel residue solidified in the carb and in the sediment bowl and it's passages.
When we removed the sediment bowl assembly from the fuel tank, it was disgusting. There was rotten gas in the glass bowl which after soaking for a few hours in thinners, has all come out. But there is a small pipe about an inch and a half long sticking out of the sediment bowl body that goes up into the fuel tank. There is a brass fitting on the front of the carb that a friend has suggested is meant to be opened when the fuel level gets below the little pipe and acts as a reserve sort of thing. but the passage way is blocked. Does anyone have any idea as to how to clean that out? The passage way does not seem to go straight down into the bowl and I cannot get anything ( I have tried dental tools ) through as the passage way does not seem to go in a straight line. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. gary

I haven't compared all the carb cleaners out there, but I had a unique experience with the Autozone brand. I was cleaning a couple of carbs the other day and my hands started burning. I recognized the feeling because I used to strip furniture. I looked on the can and sure enough, Methylene Chloride was one of the ingredients. This is the big ingredient in Kutzit, one of the heavy-duty furniture strippers.

I have not had other carb cleaners (like Gunk) to burn like that so I doubt they have MC in them. If you have a carb painted and want to keep it that way, DON'T use Autozone cleaner or you'll be repainting it.

Also if you WANT to use the Autozone cleaner, get some good nitrile rubber gloves to work with, and DO NOT get any overspray in your face or you'll be sorry. You'll run through a few sets of gloves but it'll keep your skin intact.

Soaking and poking. Get a spray can of carburetor cleaner - spray some in the tube, poke around with a wire. Spray, soak, poke. It takes a while. I've had better luck with carb cleaner than lacquer thinner. If you have air available, reverse blow the thing too. It's a messy and time consuming process, but do-able.
