Can anyone tell me the history on the To-20 high and low speeds. Alot of To-20 tractors i have seen do not have this option.

My TO-20 has an optional Hupp - all it does is lower the ground speed AND the PTO speed, making it useless for anything that is PTO driven.

Hi Monty.. Jeff is entirely correct, but to just add a little more info, even though Ferguson never officially adopted the Sherman Hi/Lo as an "option", the Ford company did, hence you will find info in their Ford logo'ed supplements refering to such. Even though Ferguson, did not "officially" adopt the option, there were many Ferguson tractors modified, even by Ferguson dealers. The transmissions for each were identical except that the Ferguson version had a different shifter casting to relocate the levers to provide clearance for the gear shift start mechanism. It is my understanding (I haven't tried it) that the Ford version can be installed in a Ferguson if you are willing to giveup the gear shift start safety feature. There were a half dozen or so companies that sold an after market reduction unit, some installed before the transmission and some after. You can read more about these auxillery transmissions at John Smith's "N" site at the link below... Jim

The history is that there is no history...

The TO-20 was not manufactured with a high/low spped range option. From the factory there was only the 4 speed transmission + Reverse.

The High/Low speed option you are referring to was an ad on option made by outside manufacturers, such as Hupp, Sherman, etc.

Thus, these are not form Ferguson. I hope this helps, perhaps someone with more knowledge about the suppliers can step in.
Jeff
