I acquired a TO20 recently and haven't used the 3 pt until today - the arms seem free and go up and down and stay in a position without drifting so I figured that the system was good until today - I chained a log that it should have been able to lift and lift chatters and won't go up with a load (the log). I'll try my neighbors’ plow someday as I don't have any implements. I was wondering if the relief valve could be the problem

The chattering will most likely be the safety valve but if the valve was worn the hydraulics would drop and as it is not dropping that is in doubt. It should lift 800 lbs on the link arms. If it was the Pump worn it would not chatter as it couldn't raise enough pressure to do that. Are you sure that the load you are trying to lift is not too great, that is what it points too from what you say. Try your neighbours plow on it before you do anything If you need the information on how to find out just what the problem is, email me at:-
fergusontractors@tiscali.co.uk and tell me what is doing, I will send you all the info you need to do it.....John

Think you may be right - even without pulling the inspection plate I pulled the dipstick and what had been normal looking gearbox oil is now foamy and it isn't from water - I suppect a leak frothing up the oil. Now comes the question, are parts still available to rebuild the pump, work cyl - piston (rings) relief and or control valve?

Yep! You can get them on this site(look for Tractor Parts on the upper left)and Sparex sources them. Find out what you need first. It could be something really simple and cheap.

Jerry - Thanks.

That parts page for Ferguson has everything - I can even do a carb rebuild for cheap - thanks again.

Now to open it up. The last time, last summer, I was in a IH 966 - up to my elbows in 90 weight gear oil - wife will have me sleeping with the tractor - you can't wash that gear oil off.

The oil in your Ferguson is not gear oil. It's GL-1 Mineral Oil, or at least it should be. You can find it at NAPA and if you do an archive search, you'll finda a NAPA part number.
Good luck and post back what you find when you open it up.

P.S. Your lucky the weather's warming up. Sleeping with the tractor might be almost bearable. Can't beat curling up with a wife though!

Remember the lift is only good for 750-800 Lbs.

You most likely have a leak in the system. Pull the right side cover off, start the tractor and make sure the PTO is connected. Move the lift lever up to the lift positionand using a flashlight, look up toward the cylinder for a leak.(DO NOT PLACE YOUR HANDS IN THE HYDRAULIC PUMP CHAMBER.)Anything greater then a few drops is not normal. SOmetimes the rings get worn, the cylinder gets scored, or is cracked or the piston gets bound up.

Using a mirror, look at the right front corner of the pump chamber and there is a tube that goes up tot the lift cover. Makes sure it's not leaking. If your relief valve is open it will be making a lot of noise and there will be a lot of turbulence around the pump.

Move the control lever up and down and observe that the linkage is moving smoothly. Finally, shut the motor off and make sure the control fork is attached to the control valve.

Usually leakage is the major culprit, but a stuck open relief valve or a stuck control valve could also be the problen as could the control fork/linkage not being connected.
