I have owned a 1951 TO30 for about 6 yrs - great little tractor - with no major problems, used mostly for brush-hogging. This wkend I was mowing along and suddenly a loud clunking noise or two came from the engine and it stopped. It turned over rather slowly with the starter a little and then clunked loudly again. I stopped thinking something was definately wrong inside... Any likely candidates?

Oil pressure has always read a little low, but I was not driving so don't know exactly what it was. I did check the oil before starting and it was ok. Also, temp was ok. Guess I need to tear into it and see what gives...

Anyway to check for proper functioning of the oil pump while I have everything apart?

Uhhh, sorry for your luck! It does indeed sound like a rod or broken piston. Good news is, providing the crank is okay, you can replace just the broken rod/piston, and not need a 100% rebuild. Usually you buy new pistons as a sleeve/piston set. The sleeve is easy to pull & replace. Dropping the oil pan should allow you to see what is going on in there. While you are investigating, pull your crank bearing caps check the the condition of the caps and crank & check clearance with plasti-gauge thread. A typical low oil pressure cause is worn crank clearances.

Checking the oil pump while the engine is apart is not totally practical, you can inspect & measure the relief valve spring to make sure it is proper length, but can't really measure pump gear wear. However, an oil pump rebuild kit is ~$50, you can replace all the wear components.

What kind of oil pressure are you reading when you were operating the tractor? By your description, I'd guess you threw a rod.

Sounds like you may be buying some engine parts or a new one. Probably you have a connecting rod that is in more than one piece.
