What do you use to coat the head gasket. I just rebuilt the motor and let it run for a few hours. Altough it did not leak I had to remove the head and found it was pretty soft around the holes where the water to passes thru to the head. It seems this could be a problem down the line.

All that is recommended is a thin coat of grease, which is enough to allow the gasket to move slightly without dragging.

Hm.... what do you mean, do you lubricate a copper head gasket before installing it ? I have never even heard about that before.

Does it apply for all engines using a composite gasket with a copper layer on each side, gas/petrol and diesel engines ?

We always used to do it, we never used gasket cement and we did it on all engines. It is only a thin smear not worth talking about really but it allows the gasket to creep when you are tightening it up. If there is going to be a leak it won't stop it or prevent it. A lot don't use anything, some swear by gasket cement but personally I don't like the mess that cement makes, it's a sod to get off.

When I re-installed my head, I use Permatex spray on copper gasket sealer.
