TEA Engine Oil Pressure

The engine oil pressure on my 1953 TEA20 varies from 60 psi cold to less than 10 psi at operating temperature. I have tried adjusting the pressure relief valve on the external oil filter, this did not make any difference. I am using 5w30 heavy duty oil. Any suggestions as to trouble shooting this problem would be appreciated.

Thank you all for your good and timely advice. I changed from 5w30 to a straight 30 weight oil, oil pressure is now at 20 psi at low idle to 40 psi at high idle, both at working temperature. I am ordering a pump repair kit to be installed this winter. Thanks again.

The pressure relief valve does not boost the pressure that much anyway. your oil is far too thin and you need to change it to sae 30/40 grade. if the pressure is still low (it should run between 40 - 60 psi when the engine is in good order but lower is possible on a worn engine) you could try fitting a new Rotor pack in the oil Pump as it will be worn by now, this is available from this site or from a Sparex dealer as part number S61996

The design of engines of that era demanded usually an oil of 30 or 40 grade. You are using 5 (which will behave like a 30 when hot - except these old tractors hardly ever get hot nowadays). I'd use nothing thinner than 20/50. Of course, wear will undoubtedly create similar problems, but an oil designed for today's ultra close tolerance engines just isn't suitable for those older designs.

Uou might try using a heavier grade of oil and see if that changes the situation. I have a relatively tight Z129 Continental remanufactured engine in my TO-30 and I have a consistent 27 psi oil presure hot or cold with 10W40 oil. Usually the problem that you are seeing is due to worn main bearing clearances and going to heavier oils may help you go a bit further before you have to do the inevetatble and install new bearings. The other posibility is that you oil pump is worn.
