A few weeks back I posted about a surging problem coming from my to30. I only use the tractor a couple times a year, and it is about 3 hours away from me so when I go there and it doesnt run well I get frustrated, but I love the thing. The old problem was that it would seriously surge under any load. I adjusted the carb and all was well with it. After adjusting the carb it was runnning well but a little hard to start. I shut her down and checked oil, air filter, coolant etc. I also checked the point gap and saw that there was none!! I adjusted it by eye(i know i know) and she seemed to start up much faster and run smoother. I started to bush hog with her but it seemed like she had no power at all. I usually could run in second gear all day long even in the thick stuff, but even in first she was struggling hard and I had to stop completely a few times in order to not stall out. Well long story cut short, my starter was already on the way out and it finally gave way shortly after that so I could not mess with it any longer for the weekend. Do any of you have any ideas as to what may be my problem? Could the gap be tooo large? Also, could I get the stock 6volt starter rewired to 12volt?(i have a 12 volt kit on it) Thanks in advance all..and sorry for the long post

Really you need to check your primary ignition circuit out so that you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. That means you have not corroded or dirty terminals, that points are not corroded and they are set properly (0.022"). Make sure that the ignition timing is set correctly as Jim recommended AND that the centrifugal advance is working properly. Also check for shaft/bushing wear on the distributor by pushing radially (from the side) on the shaft with the points properly adjusted and closed ( rubbing block on flat of the distributor cam). The shaft motion should be no more than 0.002" and the points should not move at all.

Check your fuel flow by making sure that with th tank valve wide open, and holding a container under the carb, remove the plug at the bottom of the carm Fuels should CONTINUOSLY GUSH OUT LIKE A COW PEEIN' ON A FLAT ROCK FOR AS LONG AS THERE IS FUEL IN THE TANK. (60-90 seconds is enough, however.) if the flow just dribbles or is interment, you have afiel supply problem and you need to check the filters in the sediment bowl and on the carb ilet elbow. Also check the vent hole in the gas cap.

If you don't know how to do these checks, then do a search in the archives as the methodology has been discussed many times. If you don't understand something, get back and ask.

I just installed an electronic ignition kit in my TO 30 (easy job) I immediately needed to reset the timing (by ear).
That 56 year old tractor now purrs like a kitten with power I never experienced before.

Short answer is, yes, a point gap too large may not give enough "dwell" time for the coil to work properly (or at all) and increasing the point gap will advance your timing...

The first can give a weaker spark and the later gives the spark at the wrong time... either can decrease power output. You need to bring both into spec..

As for the starter, yes again.. it can be rewired (by a good auto-electric shop) to 12 volts, but that is not necessary.. there are hundreds (if not thousands) of 12 volt conversions using the starter wound for 6 volts... some may claim shorter life, but it works equally good in my opinion.. Jim

I should make it clear that changing point gap is not the correct way to adjust timing... only a result of opening the points sooner due to the larger gap.. First, set you gap to spec.. then adjust timing by rotating the distributor in its "mount".. Jim
