My Ferguson was leaking gear oil past the PTO shaft, so I suspected the oil seal. When I removed the over-running coupler, I discovered the sleeve retaining snap ring had broken and fallen away. I was able to move the shaft forward and backward a half inch with the ring gone. When I pushed it forward the oil ran out and when I pulled it back to the position the ring would hold it, the oil merely dripped. I have a new oil seal and gasket, so though the trouble appears to be related only to the ring, I decided to pull the bearing retainer and replace the seal. The service manual says I should "bump or press" the shaft from the retainer. I was able to force it through with my thumbs. My questions are: 1) Is 1/2" forward/backward play in the PTO shaft normal, when the retaining ring is not holding it stationary? If not, what could the play indicate? 2) Should I have needed to apply more pressure to press the shaft from the retainer? If so, what does that indicate? 3) Where can I look for a replacement sleeve retaining ring? I don't see them on any web sites. Is this a special item? Can I use one from a Ford 8N? Regards, Don

The reason the Circlip has come out of the PTO bearing housing is that the PTO shaft to your mower is not sliding freely and it is locking up. When the mower rises and falls and the PTO is in this state it pulls and pushes on the PTO shaft. So clean your shaft and lubricate it so that it slides easily, check that is isn't bent as well. The play you mention is not normal, it should be fixed, it's due to the Circlip coming out, they hold the bearing in position in the housing. Check the bearing as it must have been loaded for it to break the Circlip.6206 or Sparex S18056 The circlip is 62mm internal if you cant find one they are same as Ford and Sparex do them as part S55112

Hello John,
Your reply has been very helpful. I checked the Sparex site and I was able to order the clip from them, and hope to have it delivered this week. I examined the bearing and it looks OK. I only had about an hour on the machine this season when I noticed the oil leaking. I took off the shaft to the mower, and you are correct, I could slide it, but not freely, and it would stick when fully compressed. I've cleaned it, but I'm wondering now if it had the wrong lubricant. It looked like it was bearing grease on the shaft. What would you recommed I use to lubricate it now that it's clean?
Another question about lubricant. I'm replacing the oil seal in the PTO and decided to change the gear oil instead of recycling it. Originally, I had Permatran III in the case, but the local MF dealer went out of business last year. I've been told that the oil I need must contain mineral oil and/or be GL1. For what oil should I search? I,m having trouble locating anything labeled with mineral oil or GL1.

Hi Don, Check the sleeve on the PTO shaft that the seal runs on as well, if it is marked it needs replacing, these are available. Lube the PTO shaft with any good quality grease, there are better greases but the likelihood of you having any is a bit remote and to buy a tin for just such a small amount would be wasteful. Just keep checking the PTO shaft and make sure that it is clean and doesn't stick and everything should be ok. The oil in the Transmission should be GL1 90W straight mineral oil or you can use 15W/30 Multi-grade, you may find that the Multi-grade oil available in your area will vary from this but that is ok as they will take into account the temperature in your region. The GL1/90W is equivalent to SAE30 or 40 so it is quite light. I don't know where you are but in the US you can buy GL1 from NAPA part 65-205, but if you are in Canada definitely use the Multi-grade as it doesn't get as heavy in the cold weather, this makes starting much easier and the hydraulic will operate sooner. The oil should be changed every 12 months or 720 hours whichever comes first, not changing the oil allows it to form a sludge. If you decide to use the Multi-grade you should attempt to clean out the sludge that may be in the housings before you fill up with the new oil. John

Hello John,
Right again. I found the GL1 90W straight mineral oil at NAPA. $41.50 for 5 gallons, which is far less than I anticipated spending. I live in NorthWest Vermont about 30 minutes from the Canadian border. I typically retire the tractor for the winter, and use it only in the Spring/Summer/Fall for mowing and hauling cord wood and stone.
I have bearing grease so I'll use that on the shaft and keep an eye on it, as you advise. I was concerned it might be a little heavy.
Thanks also for the additional tips on the multigrade options. The straight 90 is getting hard to come by.
