Interested to hear estimates on what I should expect to pay for a TO-20 overhaul. Tractor is apparently in good working order with no major mechanical deficiencies. Just needs to be broken down, stripped and painted.

Any ideas?

I completely rebuilt my engine top to bottom, including the clutch several years back. New sleeves, pistons, crank bearings, bushing, etc, rebuilt the starter, generator, oil pump, & carb. Did all my own work except for $100 to a machine shop to press valve guides, grind valve seats, etc. Then straightened, filled, sanded, primed & painted all the sheet metal and tractor. I replaced pretty much every nut & bolt from the front axle back to the steering wheel, and totally rewired the tractor. I never tore into the tranny, lift, steering box, & didn't replace any rubber. I stopped counting $$$ when I passed $1500. I'm sure I went over $2K easy... I bought new front tires & tubes last Summer, a couple hundo more $$$. My tractor was running fine before I started except it burned & leaked a quart of oil every ~6-8 running hours & was having charging problems.
The extent of the overhaul is up to you. You can spend a couple hundo$$ on rings and valve job and spray paint, or go for the "like new" condition, tear into everything, & be prepared to spend more $$$ than your TO is worth. It's not really about money though , it's the satifaction you feel with your overhauled TO-20 when your governor kicks-in and you feel the power of YOUR sweet running rebuilt engine pull you through a tough spot.

I am not sure what you mean by "overhaul"? If there are no mechanical deficiencies and you are just looking at making it look good (which is what I am going to assume), then it depends on what your standard is... for a couple hundred dollars you can have someone pressure wash it and squirt some cheap paint at it... for a thousand (or more) you can have it partially dissassembled, stripped, primed, and painted with the best ureathane paints... or anywhere in between.... Depends on what you want... Jim

Just the primer and paint (Dupont Nason), with all the associated thinners and whatnot, will cost you around $800.00 to do the job right. Epoxy primer, sealers, topcoats. That's doing it yourself. Total disassembly, refurbishing, sandblasting to bare metal - whatever your time is worth. If you are going to pay someone else - you'd better sit down. If you need to replace all the bearings and seals - around $500.00.

If you want a show tractor yes you can spend that much for paint & materials. But if you just want a real nice looking tractor, and one you will be proud of purchase your paint at a local tractor dealership or TSC store for $30 a gallon, last I priced it. It will still look good as new if prepaired properly.
