I've a 1950 TEA 20, none of the oil was ever changed by the previous owner (since 1969 !). The gearbox oil filler is by the gearlever in the front section and the dipstick is to the rear by the seat (in the back / diff section). I kind of assumed there was a way the oil could get between the two sections. But it doesn't seem to work that way. Can anyone please tell me how to get oil into the back section where the seat is. Many thanks, Dave.

Hi Dave

The transmission differential and 3 point
hydraulic system uses same oil. You fill
whole thing by the filling plug close to the
transmission shifter and check the oil level
with the dispstick at rear by the seat. If I remember 5 or more gallons of oil are necessary
you can check tractor specs on this board.

The Sherman auxiliary transmission oil is kept at proper level by transmision input shaft passage
if the proper oil level in tractor trans/diff
it will keep the Sherman oil level. It is not possible to measure oil level in it. The only way to changel oil in the Sherman is splitting
the tractor.

If you put oil in transmiddion and you have no indication on the dispstick a big someting is
blocking passage between the trans and diff.

Hope it helps

Hi

In my previous post....

I had in mind (who knows why) that there is a Sherman auxiliary transmission on your tractor

If there is one my comments applies
if not please disregard comments regarding it

My apologies

Good luck

Thanks Joe and Rod. The oil appears to have seeped through to the back now, suspect it's full of dirt and needs a good flush (due to being at least 1969 oil !).

Above answers are correct! Oil is filled from large plug next to gear lever. Oil flows naturally through PTO shifter assembly and through 2 holes in rear of transmisson housing into the hydraulic pump area, then into the diff assembly. Oil 80-90 is thick... So it will take time to flow to the rear. 24QTS should do the trick. Dipstick on right sid below seat will show level in complete system... After draining the oil 3 times in as many days one learns these little things. when draining the oil ensure to remove all 3 drain plugs, water gets into the system and collects in the low points... good Luck!

It is supposed to run in to the rear end and pump from the transmission filler hole it could be clogged with dirt or ice probably a good idea to remove the trans and top pump cover housing and flush it all out with diesel or kerosene. Lots of dirt and crud will build up in the bottom. You7 should get a manual before you start to take it apart. It really is not to difficult. regards
