You must have a non-OEM starter circuit if you have a solenoid. Since you are talking about the shifter to actuate the starter I'm going to assume what your calling the starter switch the solenoid. To check the starter, get a jumper cable and connect it from the battery terminal, AND MAKING SURE THAT THE TRACTOR IS NOT IN GEAR, touch it to the starter lug. (If you have a 6V positive ground sytem, that's the negative terminal on the battery.). To make sure that you have good ground, put the other jumper cable on the positive terminal and clamp it to the bolt that holds the starer on. If it starts, the starter is good. Take off the ground cable and try it again. If it doesn't start, there is a bad ground. If you have a bad ground fix it and repeat the test. If it now starts, try the regular start proceedure. If it doesn't start with the good starter and the good ground than the switch is out of adjustment or is bad. To adjust it, loosen the forur nuts at the top and move the switch toward the rear of the tracxtor and tighten it down and try again. Repeat in the other directions and if you can't get a start, replace the switch. They are under $15 + shpg.
