Did Standard deliver any 23C-engines with glowplugs in the head, or did they use the intake glowplug on all engines?

Thanks

Gunnar

I have seen a 23c with glow plugs. as it ran on heavy oil - according to the info sheet, can anyone confirm whether this is correct? what precisely is heavy oil in this context? Apparently when the 23c was fitted in Standard vans it was fitted with glow plugs.

In late 1958 or early 59 The Standard 23C head went to glow plugs. This helped the cold starting considerably but not completely. The glow plugs are expensive as well. I converted mine to use early 1980s GM glow plugs and am quite pleased with the starting characteristics.

This posting is quite old now, but could you provide details about the conversion to a GM plug. I"ve got a burned out plug and $50/plug for original equipment seems a bit pricey.

Thanks,

Pete

Dear sir, I have seen at least 1 Ferguson 35 with heater plugs which I believe to be original also if you look in a genuine original MF 35 workshop manual you will see pictures & instructions under cold condition starting devices. When "leyland" took over "Standard" in the late 50s early 60s they renamed the23c and called it the OE138 they also made bigger version called the OE160 this stood for Oil engine 138/160 cubic inches whereas the 23 in the Standard name ment 2300cc. Leyland used this engine in the Atlas van which they took over from Standard as well as some small lorreys. They also sold it to whoever they could and I have seen many in compressors, forklifts etc. Almost all of these I have seen and worked on have had glow plugs in each cylinder. Perhaps your average industrial/construction worker could not stand the bad starting these engines where renownd for? You got some heads with series plugs and some with parallel.A small plug was screwed in for use with parallel as the plugs where smaller like modern day ones. Also did you know any 23c head can be drilled&tapped totake a set of modern parallel plugs. Hope this was of some use.
