Having a heck of a time trying to remove the old. Any pointers ?

These tie rod ends are very simple to remove, just slacken the nut right off and hit the steering lever or whichever it fits into and hit it smartly with a medium hammer, the shock will release the taper and it won't damage the lever. Don't be frightened of giving it a good whack if it needs it, some of these joints can really stick in that taper but you won't do anything any harm no matter how hard you hit it.....John

Are you having problems removing the castle nut, the tapered portion, or the rod end itself?

There are two or three tie rod wrenches on the market for many years.They come in (two in one designs)for small and larger rods and when hooked up to the slot tend to open the rod to loosen it while turning.(LYLE) makes a laminated one that is provided by many suppliers. CENTAUR

The manual states: "To detach remove the nuts and washers and free the taper pins by tapping the spindle arm and steering drop arm with a hide faced hammer..... "

That may have worked in the first five years of the tractors life!!

I bought a tie rod end removing tool which worked. It has a wedge shaped end and slot in the wedge to accommodate the threaded rod. Took a few good hits but works well.

It would be simple to make - email me if you want a photograph.

Before reassembly, I cleaned the taper sections with emery back to bright metal, same inside the drop arms and reassembled with a liberal coating of graphite grease.

If you"re having difficulty with the taper. Go to your local auto parts store and ask for a pickle bar. Actual name I think is ball joint seperator. They come in different sizes so tell the clerk what it"s for and they should give you the correct tool. They are relatively inexpensive. $15 - 25 American depending on size and store. If you"re not saving the old tie rod end, don"t worry about hurting the seals. The only other tool you"ll need is a hammer. The pickle bar "fork" is tapered so that when driven with a hammer between the tie rod end and it"s mount, it forces them apart. Couple good whacks and you"ll have it apart no sweat. If I"m not making sense to you, let me know and I"ll try to clarify.
