Anyone heard of using JB weld to fill hairline cracks? Repair guy tells me that he's done it with good results on a sleeved engine, that any remaining leaks were minor and stopped with Bars or Silverpowder (?). Also saw a story about using fuel oil insead of coolant, sounds strange but it apparently worked but I wonder for how long?

You may want to check the archived posts on the N board look especially at Zanes posts about block repair he has used lead pounded into a crack I think and the tractor is still running. If you did use JB weld I would be extra careful in not overheating the engine.

I just assembled a TEA20 with the Standard Motor that had sat idle for many years. There was a crack on the right side half way between the head and the carburetor on the back half of the engine about 5" long. I used a hand grinder, cleaned out the crack (not deep) and used JB Weld to seal the crack. Fingers crossed no leaks so far!!! I wouldn't use anything but proper coolant (antifreeze) in the cooling system! ciao!

If the hairline cracks are between the cylinders there may be other considerations. I have been told that cracks like those will/can travel down through the block until they reach the area where the main bearings are. Then the block is junk. I have no idea how long this would take or if it always happens. If you are rebuilding the engine and plan on using it for awhile I would have the block magnafluxed to find out how far the cracks have traveled and if possible get the block pinned. Just one persons opinion you know.

sounds logical, wonder why the continental was prone to cracks? Mine are lower cylinder walls, all three, I'm told they are 'old', result of some problem long ago or just plain metal fatigue.

I have no idea why they crack but the salvage yard where I get my parts says that it is very rare to find one with no cracks. Mine was pinned when I bought it. I had it Magna Fluxed when I started the rebuild and none of the cracks had traveled beyond the pins. Good luck with your project. I hope to be able to post some pictures of mine (such as it is) next week.

I made the remark about using fuel oil in the radiator. An aquaintance in (strangely enough)Wis. Had an old tractor(make unk.)and the block was cracked allowing water into combustion chamber. He installed the fuel oil into the rad., and ran it for about 5yrs. I would not do this though, as it does'nt fix anything, just delays the enevitable; the block must be repaired or later replaced. I guess it's true, you DO get what you pay for!
